I just joined the Marines.

Just a couple of things to remember: 1) It's all mental. The human body can withstand an amazing amount of pain if the mind is well prepared. Like the saying goes, "It's mind over matter." 2) Don't volunteer for ANYTHING!

It's mind over matter..... If you don't mind it won't matter.

Great decision to enlist in the band of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children. Get ready to earn the title Marine. Start working out daily and focus on 3 mile run times, pull ups (dead hang - no Kip method), sit ups and push ups. The better physical shape you hit boot camp at the better chances you have of making it and dealing with the other stress. Don't even think about getting a USMC tattoo before showing up at MCRD. You will be at least one of the Drill Instructor's favorite recruits if you show up with one inked anywhere on your little, nasty stinking recruit body. Always remember that pain is nothing more then the sensation of weakness leaving your body.

I look forward to you joining the fraternity Hollywood.

Now go get some!

rangerruck - Excellent all around good advice except "run 2 miles in 15 mins or less". Marine Corps PT Standard is a 3 mile run with top score being at 18 minutes or less.

Dude, you just made a decision that is going to be with you for the rest of your life. Like it or dislike it, it's going to be there like the foundation of your house. It's a good thing, voluntarily joining the military and I even commend someone that joins any branch aside from the air force. Not that the air force is a terrible choice, but they just don't seem personally challenged enough, easy street for them mostly.
I admire marines, but just remember, your butt belongs to the Dept. of the Navy :neener: .

I just joined the Marines

Congratulations from a Retired Navy Master Chief Boatswains Mate. Pray you don't get a DI like "Gunnery Sgt Hartman":D

THANK YOU and SEMPER FI

God Bless You, and keep the faith in Boot Camp. Remember the Marines have always had and continue to have a special place of honor in American history.

Congrats on deciding to join up.....even if it is to be a jarhead! :neener:

and what ever you do...STAY AWAY FROM FT. LEONARD WOOD!!!!!

Don't say that I ship out for there next week!

Even I've heard about Fort Lost-in-the-Woods.

Never specifics, just repetitive breathy mutters as the speaker rocks back and forth in the fetal position. :uhoh:

Are you goin there for whiMP training haha that place sucked man...and stay away from jackson...ive never been there but in knox they told us plenty of stories about dumbsters!!! hahaha

Congratulations!
I highly suggest checking out crossfit.com for conditioning. Many of the military special ops units use this site as their basis for physical training. If you can actually complete the workouts (which look deceptively easy on paper) then you will have no problem with bootcamp.
Good luck,

David

Thank you

I have to honor to have served as a Marine Infantryman. I am honored to have you with me in that.

My son leaves for Army basic training next week, 27th July. He did his own research and made up his own mind about enlisting and with what service. I'm proud of his endeavor.

Whereas it is not politically correct, get in touch with God. The safest place in the entire Universe is the center of God's will.

Congratulations.

I have a son that joined about 23 years ago.. He went from a young aimless kid to a man I am very proud of..
He was assigned as a recruiter in the Murrow Bldg in Ok City and was out of the office on the day of the bombing.
He's was in that squabble in Kuwait, played in the sand in Iraq, and was headed to Afghanistan, when he got a change of orders and was sent to Hawaii..

He's rarin' to get back into the fray.

He recently was promoted to Gunnery Sgt in a ceremony held on board the USS Missouri.

Don't know if you can tell I tend to brag about him when I get the chance..

Anyway, Thank you for deciding to protect your country and good luck in the Marines..

Semper Fi!!!

Regards,
Iggy

Sorry I have been unresponsive for a while. I spend the weekend down at my grandparent's, and they don't have Internet. Thank you for the words of advice, and the encouragement.

My dad bought a Bowflex a while ago, but as near as I or anyone else can tell, he's only used it once. I use it 3 or 4 times a week. I run twice a week and do two or more hikes up in the hills, usually only 4 to 5 miles. The distance will double as will the weight before too long. My runs are about 2 miles now and I am hoping to have the time down to 14 to 15 minutes before basic. I am glad it appears I will have some time to get in better physical and mental shape. I need to find a pull up bar. They were nice enough to include a DVD, a work out manual with exercises and a schedule, and a booklet with the 11 general orders and rank insignia on it. I am working on that as well.

I've been instructed by my recruiter to hold off on any tattoos until I get out of the Marines. He said that even if you're in the Marines and have a Marine Corp tattoo, it can be hard to get some of the more public positions. He has a Marine Corp tattoo on his forearm and it almost kept it out of recruiting duty. I said I might be interested in embassy duty, and he said that is a fairly prestigous position, and any visible tattoos will be scrutinized. So yes, I think I'll hold off on the ink for a while.

The key on tats for the future is "visible". Don't get anything that won't be covered by a rolled up dress shirt.

No neck, no forearm, bicep or higher is fine.

Calves are pretty much fair game since professional business attire doesn't include shorts.

If you ever get the chance to go to Combatant Diver make sure to get a shark tattoo on your calf before you go.

I am indeed.......but just for future reference if you want to use that insult you might want to remember there's no H in wimp. ;) :neener:

Simply, thank you. You will be protecting a great country and a great state....and Montana too :D .

Thanks for your service. Good luck with boot camp.

STAY AWAY FROM FT. LEONARD WOOD!!!!!

Been there. Promised God that if he would get me out of there, I would never return. He did his part and I've been holding up my end of the deal for 31 years now. I will have no problem keeping that promise for eternity.

Seriously, thanks for your service. You're the kind of people we need more of in this country.

Watch your 6.

Edit to add: You know why most Marines have bad attitudes? Because they spend months listening to how "hard" they are and what killers they'll become, how they are going to rain Hell on all those who oppose freedom and liberty. After a short while though, Uncle Sam sticks 'em on a Navy base saluting cars as they roll by. :)

"After a short while though, Uncle Sam sticks 'em on a Navy base saluting cars as they roll by."

Feel free to check the security system trying to blow by those Marines at the gate around 60 mph. I guarantee you will get more than a salute.

Marine's always have appreciated the Navy. Without them we would have had to acquire our own boats to get around the world.

Sweepers! Sweepers! Man your brooms! Always a good time with the Navy Brethren.

I was warned at MEPS to expect a lot of ribbing, esp by the Navy guys. One of the docs was in the Navy in Vietnam, the other was in the Marines. They said they gave each other a lot of crap, and that was okay because they always knew they had each other's backs, but if any other branch tried to give either of them crap, they had to go through both of them. Things might have changed since then, I don't know. I know I don't personally have anything against any other branch, and neither goes my recruiter, SSgt Weiss.

Anyways I had a question regarding the difference between MCRD and Camp Pendleton, but I googled it, so it's all good.
