Last weekend, I picked up a Ruger No. 1A in 6.5x55 Swedish and Wednesday mounted a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36 Duplex in the supplied Ruger rings. Given the light and compact dimensions of the rifle, I decided to go with an equally light and compact scope. I went to the range to sight it in today. I'm waiting for bullets and brass that are supposed to be delivered on Monday so I used a box of 140gr Remington CoreLokts I bought at the range.
I managed to produce a 3/4" 3-shot group at 100 yards for my sight in (2" high at 100 yards) and then hung up a deer target and put one in the center of the heart. This was so much better than I expected, this is now my go-to deer rifle. The ROs were as surprised as I...Ruger No. 1s are not sub-MOA rifles. This is my sixth hunting rifle and all are sub-MOA. I'll be practicing now with shooting sticks to get ready for field use. Color me pleased. I may just use factory CoreLokts...hold the load development.
