I just shot my first IDPA

I like IDPA, but realize it's a game. I started out shooting my Ruger P90, but the last few have been shooting my Sig P239. The club I shoot at doesn't run a BUG class, so I'm basically competing against the SSP guys running 10-round mags. I'm consistently at the bottom of the pack either way, but for me it's more about getting better with my shot placement. The times will come as the shot placement gets better. The last match was set up with one stage which had four strings of strong-hand supported, weak-hand supported, strong-hand only, weak-hand only.

While I didn't win the stage, I was much faster than several people with the weak hand stages. That actually says more about them than me, but it shows me that I've practiced the weak hand shots more than they have, and enough to be fairly good with my weak hand if needed. That is more important to me than fast scores.

Of all the "debates" about IDPA rules, the "I want more than 10 rounds" argument has never sat well with me. If you want to exclude a good number of people who shoot guns that don't come in 18+ capacities, such as the browning hi-power, and thereby lower membership and participation, feel free to hinder the sport because you don't like reloading.

I for one don't think everyone should have to buy a gun that can hold 18+1 or more, so that the shooter never has to reload.

Its one of the rules that helps offer a level playing field of competition.

Also, if you don't like retaining mags, just run it dry like everyone else.

In the end, if you don't like the rules, lobby for change. If it doesn't happen, then you must be in the minority. Either accept it and overcome, or don't play and leave the rest who do to our fun. There are too many bitter former IDPA shooters out there all too willing to bash the sport any chance they get.
