I kind of rescued a grail gun

Furthering the thought about handling the recoil...

Like in my photo above... I love the looks of the slim Magna grips on an N-frame. I actually bought them for the 57, but they are more appropriate on the 58, so that's where they go, now. I did shoot my pistol once... only once... with the Magnas installed, and even with milder target loads recoil was VERY unpleasant.

The Target grips aren't much better... yes, they fill the gap between the grip and the trigger guard better, but as you saw, the exposed backstrap can really pound your hand. I also had a S&W 686, I bought a very nice set of Hogue wood monogrips for it... but they, too, had an exposed backstrap... and the results were the same.

I bought that set of Pachmayr Grippers originally for my 6" 57... with the cushy backstrap filler... and they have always worked well handling recoil without feeling mushy. That set of grips has survived 4 different S&W pistols... my brother's 57, my 6" 57... and now either of my 4"ers when we go shooting.

A lot of people overlook grips for their pistols... I know I have. Good grips cost good money, and it's hard to justify the expense when the pistol already has some. A well-fitting set of grips can almost magically transform a pistol, however. Even something like a Magpul grip on an AR-15 can change the whole handing and shooting characteristic of it, and a pistol would be that, x10. I don't normally like the looks of aftermarket or custom grips... even very nice ones... which is why I usually swap my factory S&W grips back after shooting, but if you want to turn that sweet pistol into an even sweeter shooting pistol... I would encourage you to throw a little money at it for a good set of grips.
True that!

My 629’s and 686+ wear the S&W/Hogue factory rubber grips, I’ve found those to be much better on my hands than the wooden grip options shooting the .44’s and .357 with magnum loads. I was kind of hoping that these wooden grips would work because they look so much better than synthetic grips do, but I figure they’re really just eye candy after shooting the gun with them on :(.

All of my K frame .22’s, .38’s and a 6” Model 66 wear some of the wooden Thai fingergroove grips that a lot of the guys here seem to like. These fit me well, and since I don’t shoot magnum .357’s in the 66 very often, the recoil levels with these guns is far less than in my over .40 cal magnum revolvers.

I did order a set of square butt N- frame Hogue grips for the 57, they should be here by Monday.

Stay safe.

I am a S&W factory grip guy. And for hunting or just a couple of shots it doesn’t matter much what grip you have. BUT if you are going to shoot a box or two at the range, a different story. I use a padded palm glove with the trigger finger cut off. This lets me keep my fine grips and allows me to shoot 50 rounds without pain.

I agree on the wood grips. Those rubber monstrosities are just FUGLY.
I had a SBH .44M with square trigger guard and 7 1/2" barrel
When shooting anything over hot .44Spl loads, I had a padded, leather glove, with the trigger finger cut off. Amazing how much difference it made. Plus, for some reason, it cause me to change my grip enough, the square trigger guard did not bash my knuckle.

Sold it and later, bought a Blackhawk .44M, with the round trigger guard and 4.6" barrel.
The glove is long gone, but I haven't experienced the knuckle bashing.

I recently "rescued" one of my own grail guns as a matter of fact.

A 3" M65-5. It's got its share of nicks and rubs, and definitely needs a new set of grips. But it's nice. Beat up just enough I don't feel bad carrying it.

I need to find a set of factory Magnas and dig one of my extra T-grips out for it.
