I have been looking so hard at which gun to buy myself the past week, that I actually got tired of looking and too overwhelmed with statistics to make a decision. I started with every sight from buds to gun grabber, and called all over to get a CZ with no luck, phase two, get something else or wait, started looking at 1911's, E series, over $1400 with tax for the Scandium, then a voice said, you know you've done this before, and you aren't going to end up carrying it when that PM9 in your pocket is so light and airy.
Back to the commanders, then the PPQ and all of the plastic guns, just in time to catch an article that went on about how you need hi-capacity weapons in modern day scenarios, so out went the 1911's and more to the Tupperware.
But I have a few of those, but the article said I need more with 20 round capacity.
Then a drive to the LGS, where my buddy the owner starts telling me stories about being followed home last night by 3 guys in a pickup on his bumper till he pulled into a 711, and got out to 3 hooded idiots who walked up towards him, and he swept his shirt away from his 23 as they turned and left. Another chimes in with his girl who works in a hair salon, being confronted for the 2nd time this month by some hooded group at the front desk where she had her hand on her "Judge", until they saw it and left. Another guy walks in and asks for a high powered rifle, he is open carrying, asks for an AK, "or something like that" don't you have anything bigger, he asks. We don't even give him any credibility as the stories are coming fast and furious by now. Bear spray says the salon owner, that's what we need ,he tells the gun store owners girl.
He the LGS owner, explains that Bear spray was used in their barracks and still stank 2 years later, apparently the stuff hangs out like the Bears do. Now I have drifted over to the 1911's again, a load of Kimbers I some how missed catches my eye, ahh, a CDP, Crimson Trace, and several Solo's and Kimber carry's, But I thought I just decided against that. Wow a Range officer on sale, and a Springer Loaded, logic leaves the room again, haven't even gotten to the revolvers, but have to keep the stories coming or I will never see all of these guns. An hour and a half goes by, I am sweating now, Jonesing on steel and Scandium. I catch myself like a heroin addict before he sticks the needle in his vein.
I have to get out of here before it's too late. I excuse myself to go home and do some research on my next purchase, "still thinking about maybe a 357",or that Range Officer for $780, "hell it's on sale this week only. I bolt for the car. it starts and I feel the cold air hit me in the face. I made it out of there with no permanent damage. My heart rate slows down and I head home.

Go to the range

Go watch a USPSA or IDPA shoot, talk to the shooters about what and why they shoot.
Gun shops can be a waste of time.

That made me laugh :) I have been there. Fore the first few years of being married to my bride, I told her I wanted a Desert Eagle for my ten year anniversary gift.. Ten years came around and by that time I was looking for something completely different. Happy shopping.
By the way I carry a PM40 and love it. I have a Colt 1911 that I don't have the heart to take out of the safe, but it is surprisingly concealable.

You can shop because you really want a certain gun or shop because you have $1500 burning a hole in your wallet. The latter seems to lead to bad decisions.

You are over-thinking this! Decide what your needs are and then pick a gun that fills those needs. You are doing the "kid in the candy store" routine and that just leads to trouble and dissatisfaction with an impulse purchase.

It was a joke guys, kind of what every guy goes through at one time or another.

I'm sick of looking at specs for this gun and that gun and questioning what I carry. If you try to plan for every contingency, even an M1 Abrams would be inadaquate.

When you start doing that you need to go out shooting. Focus on shooting what you have the way you intend to use it. A fresh renewal from a user perspective can help you let go of false pretenses.

It's been proven time and again in self defense police shootings that the 9mm just didn't have enough stopping power. That's why most police departments now adays have switched to .40, .45, .357 sig. They all offer better penetration and stopping power than 9mm. Even our service men have complained about the m9 (beretta 92fs) not having enough stopping power against enemy combatants and how they've been lobbying for a .45 pistol for years. If a 9mm is all I had during a self defense situation I'd certainly use it. But I'm not going to go out and buy one with the intent to carry when there are better calibers out there. If you need more than 12-13 rounds of .40, .357 sig or more than 10 rounds of .45 your probably going to die in that sd situation anyhow.

Great story, especially since most of us have experienced similar moments like you described from time to time. And I have walked away from numerous deals when Plan A gave way to Plan B, then Plan C, and so on and so forth. Eventually I would sort things out and get the gun that was right for me.

You first said CZ...

In the beginning you were looking for a CZ... What model? I understand the "spin the wheel, make a deal" feeling, but when I wanted a 97 B my focus was laser.

I bought one in black polycoat at a LGS, two weeks later I bought the blued version. Maybe I am just lucky, but I found sourcing relatively easy.

Maybe we could all help each other out and post info for each other when we see a specific model for sale.

IMO... No sympathy for people who "want" a model, but won't pony up $20 more to "buy it now". To me, you obviously don't want it if $20 or even $50 breaks the deal.

"It's an investment opportunity"..is how I satiate that addiction, with a reasonable agreement from my wife: add it to the portfolio.

I peruse the LGS for the used weapons they have screwed up on the pricing, or to check the ergos, and that's all.

I take that back: I will sit the parking lot at Gander when they are doing a "buy back" program, as LOTS of guys come back out incensed at their ridiculously low offers for premium, relatively new firearms.

Know your needles!

The P01 in polycoat, floats my boat right nwo. But the Tactical or Pro model is also appealing. whatever I gat the best deal on, probably the p01. I got a price of $530 from Grab a gun.
