I need a .40 S&W - Sig 229 (just thoughts)? or a Glock 23

Shot both, own the Sig, prefer the Sig. As a range gun, which both are to me, I prefer a hammer.
Kind of apples to oranges comparison though. Plastic framed, striker fired, simple and utilitarian vs alloy frame, hammer fired, somewhat boojie, better machining.
The Sig just shoots better for me, the sig takes away a lot of the sharpness of the .40's recoil. Its almost mushy feeling, and its not just the few extra ounces over the glock. Hard to explain but unmistakeable.

I have its bigger brother, but use a .357 Sig barrel in it instead of .40 cal. I hated the long trigger reset so I put the short trigger reset kit in and it’s much better. Been considering doing the same with a 229 but the reality is I like my G32 too much.

I have a short stubby triĝer finger thats a bit crooked from arthritis Glocks just don't work for me, when I take one in my natural grip my finger nearly binds against the bottom of the trigger guard.
Sigs work OK as long as I put the short reach trigger in them.
I traded the 23 off and my 229 was stolen along with the truck it was in. I currently have four 40s and none are currently in production a FN FNS40, XDm in 5.25 and 3.8 compact and a first Gen Walther PPS.

Note the P229 was designed for the .40 S&W.

Until the Gen 5 guns, the G23 was little more than a G19 with a .40 S&W barrel. The 3-pin design was to fix problems with the .40S&W guns, the Gen 4 was designed to fix problems with the .40 S&W guns, and the Gen 5 finally put a heavier slide on the .40 S&W guns. We'll see if that's the answer.

that’s true!

I have both, I use the Sig for my nightstand gun. I often carry the Glock in the winter. If I could only keep one, it would be the Glock. If I had to make a head shot at 25 yards, it would be the Sig hands down.

I pocket carried that 23 in my cargo pants (yes, cargo pants was cool 10 years ago) and I shot my sister 229 and it’s QUALITY

I currently have a 226 in 40 S&W that I really liked and was my favorite until I got my M11-A1. I’m thinking of getting rid of the 226 and getting a 229 in .40 with the E2 grips. Don’t see myself without a .40 anytime soon.

I have a junk load of .40 components and only 1 gun.

If I'm reading this correctly you already have a 40 S&W pistol, If so, what do you already have? I'd just use it if so. I wouldn't invest heavily in 40 S&W guns or ammo right now. If you've got a bunch of 40 caliber bullets and handload move up to a 10mm to load them.

If you just have to have another 40 S&W pistol used Glock 22's are around $300 since so many Police Departments have traded them recently. The 23's bring a bit more. Anything used in 40 caliber is bargain priced right now.

I've owned several of the classic Sig DA/SA pistols. They are fine guns, but don't do anything, any more accurately than a Glock does for significantly less money.

I can’t comment on the SIG but I do have 2 G23s. A gen 3 and 5, I really like them. I’ve heard the heavier slide is supposed to cure something. I’ve never seen or heard of the other generations having any problem myself. I have a 22 and 27 gen 3 and 4. Never had any problem with any of them.

I’ve seen lots if them lately

Me either. I don’t hand load the semi auto pistols (9/40/45) so everything I shoot is factory. I don’t even use the +p, +p+ in the 9s or 45s. I figure if I hit the target the normal stuff works fine.

Depending on how bottomless the financial well is, a trade-in Glock will be close to half the cost if s similar condition SIG 229.

If $$ is no object, the 229 is a nice pistol, with a bit more panache than the Glock. Personally, I would go the SIG route if I was in the market for another .40 S&W pistol.

(Full disclosure: I have a Beretta 96 Centurion DAO, a S&W 4013 and a Puerto Rico Police trade-in Glock 22 in .40.)

Stay safe.

Nice thing about Glock 23 is that you can readily shoot cheaper 9mm through 40-9mm conversion barrels. (FYI, Glock 23 barrel will work in G27 so G23 40-9mm conversion barrel can be used in both G23/G27 ;))

There are plenty of LE trade-in G23s for $320 - https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsupers...-trade-in-glocks/of3/40-SW/order_by/min_price

Another benefit of Glock 23 is Advantage Arms make 22LR slide kit to shoot even cheaper 22LR (Comes with adjustable sights and last round hold open) - https://palmettostatearmory.com/adv...magazine-and-range-bag-black-aag19-23-g3.html

Look at another way ... At current price of ammunition, shoot enough 9mm/22LR over 40S&W and in time, savings would be such that you could buy any gun of your choice, probably one every year ... Win - Win :)👍

If you live in northern or central Kentucky I'll make you a heck of a deal on a P229 DAK police trade. I made a lowball bid on Gunbroker about 10 years ago and actually won the darned thing. My hands are just too small to find it comfortable.

The Free state of Kentucky! I’m in Seattle and it’s Raining!

I like the grip!

If anything I would get a .357 Sig barrel to go with it.

I have a 229 in 9mm, I picked up a complete .40 slide assy and a dozen mags for it then got the .357 barrel.
The night sights were long dead so I used a TFO front and an Ameriglo plain black rear on it.
There for a bit both calibers were dirt cheap and I shot quite a bit of it.
Now it's into reload your own territory.
Still have a ton of HST's in .40 and Gold Dots in .357 Sig.
Back when TSUSA had a box of 50 for $18 delivered I stocked up on all calibers.
