OK, its not an AR 10, its a DPMS LR-.308B, but close enough.:)

I am getting ready to buy one within the next week and I need a scope for it.

I'm not all that familiar with optics, so I need a bit of help...I have never shot an "AR 10" before, so i don't know what the recoil is like, and I don't know what scopes are going to hold up to it.

I thought about getting an el cheapo scope for it now, and then getting a really nice scope for it later, but I changed my mind...I figured if I am going to spend big bucks on some really nice glass, it will be for a nice bolt gun, and my tin foil hat is pointing high so I want to get as many auto-loaders as I can before '08.

I would like to keep it to $300 or under, preferably under but not mandatory.

If you have suggestions, feel free to post links with them.:)

Thanks in advance guys/gals!

I'm confused. Do you want a cheap scope or an expensive one? Cuz $300 is an el cheapo scope. It sounds like you want a quality scope from your post.

look at the bushnell 3200 series scopes, the 10x40 w/mildots is decent for the money and can be found for less than 2 bills in some areas.

Sorry, the post was a bit confusing(it made sense when I was writing it :p)...

I was basically saying when I decide to spend big bucks on a quality scope, It'll be for a bolt action rifle.

So once again, ~$300 is my limit for now.

Edit: Also, I was thinking about something with variable power...Something around 4-12x40 give or take...If this really limits me, then a fixed power isn't totally out of the question.

What about a leupold rifleman 4-12x40?

I wonder why you are saving a good scope for a bolt gun only? My AR-10 will shoot as good and as far as most of my bolt guns but then again I put some good glass on it. Recoil is not too bad with the AR-10 and I'm sure a decent Bushnell or Nikon will hold up just fine. I opted for a 6.5-20x40mm Leupold VXIII on mine. I found it on Ebay for $600.

Is there not a decent scope out there for $300? I can't really do $600 right now. I am already spending $1000 on the rifle and $5-600+ to feed her.

Would I just be better off getting a really cheap scope right now just to have some sort of magnification, and then in a couple of months getting something nicer?

I know I'm not familiar with scopes, but it's just hard to believe there is nothing decent out there for ~$300.

What about this guy

I did not say there were not decent scopes out there for $300 because there are. I was just pointing out that you should not discount the ability of your new rifle just because it is a semi-auto gun. With "Good" glass and the right ammo it can be as good as a bolt gun.
Look at Nikon, the monarch and Bushnell elite scopes for something in your price range. I am sure you will find something that will do the job and not break the bank. As with any rifle Bolt or Semi always buy the best glass you can afford, it does make a difference.

Hi Bazooka...

Here is a good site to get scopes and red dots from too.

Of course you can get darned good scopes for well under $600-$100.
There are just a few forum-ites here whom, for reasons known only to themselves, couldn't bring themselves to recommend a pair of socks that didn't cost $589.95, on sale.

Good luck !

Vitamin,

I looked at the SS, but I would prefer something with variable power.

Shawnee,

You didn't post a link.:)

Samgotit,

How is the 3-9? Is it pretty clear?

Thanks a bunch guys.

Samgotit,

How is the 3-9? Is it pretty clear?

Very clear, but note, I don't have a lot of experience with scopes. I've handled a few VX-I & IIs, lower end Nikons and the like. I like the Burris easily as well.

I'll throw in a scope for heavy use.

The site has many, many different versions. This one is just one I grabbed at random. I have scopes from Russia on my Saiga and my FAL. They work wonderfully, and fit your wallet very nicely. They go anywhere from 150-900.

+1 for the Super Sniper. You may not have a variable, but you will have a durable scope that will hold its value when you're ready to upgrade to better glass.

is this for hunting, target, or SHTF?

For hunting, 300 dollars gets you a pretty good scope.

For Target, I recommend the bushnell 4200 elite (you can find a used one for well under 300).

For Tactical, look around for a used good scope on gun broker. 300 new doensn't get you much.

I'm an armchair warrior, so I will be tactically eliminating paper targets, milk jugs, cans etc. :p

Oh yeah, before I forget...What rings/base do I need for an LR .308?

Pointing me in the right direction(via internet link) would be greatly appreciated. Like I said before, I'm pretty clueless.

What is the difference between the 4200 and the 3200 series?

What is the difference between "target" and "tactical?"

Sorry for all of the questions, I'm just trying to learn.

Get a super sniper, I have one(10x) on my .308 savage and it works great. Mildot reticle+target knobs and they're only $300. It's a fixed power optic(which is what keeps the cost down) and a lot of people use them on 50 bmgs, they're very sturdy. If I did it over again I would get the 16x or maybe even a 20x.
