I need some encouragement. Considering buying a Colt Delta Elite.

Hi all.

I live in Kalifornistan and have the rather rare opportunity to purchase a Colt Delta Elite. It only has several hundred rounds through it, is blued, has some mods, including ported barrel & slide, but is pretty sweet overall. No extra-fancy stuff, just extended slide release & safety, maybe one or two other minor things that I could swap out with more original parts if I so desired.

Seller is asking $775.

Normally, I wouldn't hesitate, but I've just purchased THREE 1911's and this one will be a bit of a stretch.

I know that if I don't jump on it, I probably won't get another chance like this for a looooooong while.

What do you think?

I need some encouragement....... :)

The call of the Delta Elite... RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

You may as well get it... If you don't, then you'll just have to find another one later. I finally got my hands on a used Delta Elite earlier this year, and it made me truly regret the day I sold my first Delta Elite (a beautifully customized gun by Joe Bonar of Novaks).

Delta Elites are cool pistols. Since the one you've described has been "slightly" customized, I'd want to handle and shoot it first before making a final decision.

Customizing isn't necessarily bad. But with custom work everyone's tastes are different, and the end result has to work for you.

This particular DE works for me ( :) ) :

When checking out the gun use Sean Smith's 1911 10mm tech page for reference.

I went to a stronger hammer spring, oversized FP stop with the bottom left square, and conventional 20lb recoil spring and guide rod and mine runs like a champ.

With the compensator I imagine it's running a 16-18 lbs recoil spring if everything else is set up correctly. Get all the gory details on Sean's page :)

Jump on it with both feet. You can only get a Delta via PPT in CA, and I don't think Kimber ever submitted their 10mm for the drop test.

I also think soon CA is will require all autoloaders to have mag safeties?

$775 is about what I paid for mine, three years ago when I still lived there.

King's Gun Works in southern CA sells a neat stepped steel guide rod that allows use of the dual recoil springs, and avoids the breakage problems found with the factory guide rod.

Deltas are way cool pistols:D

Depends whether you like the changes. I would not want the barrel and slide ported (and THAT is what I consider to be the "extra-fancy stuff").

$775 is a lot for a gun with "wrong" mods. If you had the opportunity to get bone stock Delta Elite in good condition (even for MORE money), I would say jump on it.

Your call...

I've been looking to seriously buy a 10mm handgun for about a year and have come to the conclusion that the Delta Elita is the best one available. Yes, the Glock 20 and S&W 1066 are also good, but the DE would be my choice.

OK - here's some:
Of all the guns I have shot, two were easily the most accurate:
The Colt DE, and the new S&W1911.

You don't want to know what I paid for mine :D

I wouldn't pay that for one that has had the barrel and slide ported. Find out who did the porting job first. Looks don't necessarily means it will work properly and a reconized smith will guarantee his work.

I had one when they first came out. My first mag blew the slide stop right off the pistol. I send it to Colt and had it fixed and sold it the next day.
