I have noticed a common theme amongst many of the posters here. Many post about a favorite gun that they foolishly sold, or were required to sell due to dire financial circumstances. A friend of mine sold his S&W Model 627-0 to buy diapers and baby food, and he is always drooling over my 627-0. I was just curious about The One That Got Away and the circumstances surrounding you parting with it.

I have not sold any firearms (yet). I usually just end up buying a new safe, but the Mrs. is catching on to this....

627 Vcomp 3 inch. Only one I legitimately regret selling.

I mean there are a couple that were good guns that I probably should have kept but they are rather pedestrian and fairly easy to replace if I really want to. (Glock 30 original fat grip, a P225). But that 627 is my kick myself one.

That would be the .357 Blackhawk I got from a friend in CO many years ago. I sold it to a gun shop while buying a .357 SP101 cuz my new wife said 1 out 1 in.
Got $160 for it. Thats the one I regret for every reason you can think of. Boy oh boy.

2.5" Python; sold to get water turned back on. I thought it wise with a 4 month old in the house. That's the one I miss the most.
S&W 422; Sold shortly before the Python, to pay rent.
7.5" Redhawk: Ditto.
CZ24: Picked it up for next to nothing, and had the Python for a carry/ HD gun. Should have kept it. Sold at a gun show, at least I doubled my money on it.
S&W 19 2": Traded for a Colt M1908, because I had the Python, and always wanted an M1908.
SWMBO's Colt "Lady" Thuer derringer, sold to make rent. I did ask her permission to sell it first.
Colt M1908: Traded the M19 for it, sold to make rent.
My dad's .44 Mag Vaquero: Sold for rent. He chewed my tail good, and took an H&R Handi-Rifle of mine. because he liked it.
Forgot one: (Tried to blot it out of my mind.) Traded a nice Colt Cobra for an S&W BodyGuard .38, right before snake guns went through the roof. Traded it because the hammer bit into my 'love handles'. I should have bought an extra hammer and bobbed it instead.
Another one I'd forgot; An 1847 Walker replica, about the same time as the Python.

I also regret giving my older son a couple pistols: I gave him a Hi-Point JHP .45 I got for under $100, he traded it towards an 1100.
I also gave him my RIA GI 1911 after I bought my Taurus PT1911AR. He traded it towards a Taurus Model 66 .357.
When I asked him why, he said, "I don't like .45's." (I should do a paternity test!)
But all those years when I had the .45's and ammo, he was more than glad to shoot them up.......:cuss:

I should have just given him the Star BM, he liked that one. Sold that to my best friend, who still has it, so I get to shoot it now and again.

Had a series 70 Gold Cup I got for a good price. It was too early in my shooting career to really appreciate what I had. I also at the time had the sweetest-triggered 6" Colt Trooper 3. Shot them both, just got tired of chasing the brass on the Cup. Decided I needed to raise money for my first Benelli SBE, so the Gold Cup went. Still have the Trooper, and that one will stay with me.

Looking back, I should have kept the Gold Cup and gotten a paper route....

Back when I had no money...............
I used a Remington Rand 1911 and a Belgian Browning T for trading fodder in the late 80’s.
The 1911 got me a Sako Finnbear, 30/06, which I still use to make meat. The Hi Power got me a 3” 629 SW 44 magnum.
I haven’t traded or sold any guns in the past twenty years. I like what I have in the safe and I don’t have to compromise anymore.
That is one of many blessings.

I regret every gun I've sold.

Sold because I was young and stupid/ignorant:
  • .44 magnum Vaquero
  • SMLE No 1 MKIII (headspace was generous, back of the cases looked like they were expanding a bit and it worried me, too dumb to try to fix it (pre internet, no knowledge about it)
  • Canadian Para-Ordnance P14-45 stainless ("had some scratches that didn't come from me" so I had to sell it  )
  • S&W SW40F Sigma (original, hideous, and 100% reliable) sold to a buddy who needed a home-defense pistol and he still has it and loves it
Sold due to financial hardship/pay the bills
  • Nice Beretta Onyx Pro (with the jeweled receiver and "Xtrawood" that looked like a million bucks)
  • Pristine Franchi 48 AL 20 gauge :(
Wish I had every one of them back.

I've GIVEN away a few guns and would gladly give away a few others that have given me problems. But I try not to sell guns anymore.
  • SIG P938 persistent jams/FTE, 2 trips to factory didn't help, gave it away with full disclosure
  • Gave away my dad's nice S&W Model 37 to my brother
  • Gave away my dad's old JP Sauer and Sohn .22 revolver to my other brother
  • Gave away my dad's Remington 581 to my other brother (Daryl) :D
  • Probably a few others I can't remember

The main gun that I sold that I truly wish I wouldn’t have had to was a Colt Combat Gov’t .45 ACP that I bought in 1983 and sold in ‘88.

We literally had no food in our house. My daughter was 4 years old. My wife and I were both unemployed. There was a stick of butter in the fridge and a pound of macaroni in the cupboard. That’s it.
I sold it for $265, but it was worth it to see the happiness on my wife and daughter’s faces on the way to the grocery store.

Had a Sig P228 .40 in dark earth color that at the time was not common and limited - doubt it is worth any more now, but I hated to have to sell it.

I also sold a bunch of guns that I bought from my best friend's widow after he passed. Hard times hit and needed the money - they were sentimental. I still have and carry the one Sig P239 he sold me many years ago for $300.

I think more than regretting selling, I regret not buying over the years. Now I look at the prices of guns that were once reasonable and they are hard to come by or priced out there.

I had a Desert Eagle in 357 Mag that an acquaintance wanted. I didn't feel like selling so he said he'd trade me straight up for two rifles of his. When I asked what two rifles he said a H&R Garand and a Springfield 03A3.

I said DEAL!!!

I did though miss the Deagle, so recently I picked one up in 50AE with a 44 Mag conversion barrel. I like it a lot better then the 357 Mag version I traded.

Slipped in a Newhart reference... nice!

I have sold a few handguns:

A satin nickel 6” Taurus 66 .357... like many of the others above it was for rent, food or both.

A Charles Daly 1911 .45 was sold to a buddy who wanted a 1911. I have three other 1911 .45’s, making this one expendable.

A Bubbaed S&W victory .38 S&W that I bought without knowing it was punched out to .38 Spl. After splitting cases the first time I shot it I bought a K frame .38 Spl cylinder off eBay, had it fitted and sold that lemon. The $$ was turned right back around for a nice used Model 17-3 .

A H&K USP .45 that I just had to have for duty use...then when I got it I hated it. I sold this and a 24” Colt Accurized Rifle (24” factory target AR) and paid for three airline tickets to England.

A 5” 629 Classic .44 Mag was sold to pay for a vehicle repair bill.

I have traded a couple as well;

A 640 Centennial.38 and $300 for two model 19’s.

The 4” model 19 from that trade went straight across several years later for a SRH .454.

A SIG P 226 9mm for a Winchester 1894 Trapper in .44 Mag.

I loaned my Gen 1 Glock 17 to my Dad to carry while fishing in the mountains. I need to get that back someday, I think he’s done with stream fishing now.

Other than these, I think I have all of the other handguns I’ve bought over the years.

Stay safe.

I'm grateful to say that I haven't yet been forced by circumstance to sell or trade a gun I liked.

I've sold or traded plenty that I didn't care for, but that's different. There's not one of them I'd want back. Most I probably don't remember.

The below S&W Model 29-5 was one that got away and came back several times.
SW%20Model%2029.png

A good friend constantly asked me to sell it to him and I finally did for $300, it was years ago. He complained it hurt to shoot so I bought it back for $300. This went on maybe three times and always the $300 to where it became a standing joke. I last bought the gun back maybe 20 years ago and a week later my friend suffers a massive coronary and dies. He was in his mid 40s. Go figure. While I have some nice revolvers this old Model 29 is one I am fond of and glad I got it back.

I had a Springfield Trap Door circa 1876 that was beautiful that I let get away, while not quite a handgun I still regret letting that one go. Not like I needed the money but a guy kept bugging me and when he made a real high offer I took it, I still mourn that dumb decision.

It's like automobiles. The automobiles I got rid of years ago "56 ford, 57 chevy, 63 chevy, 59 ford, 57 plymouth, 66 Ford pickup" and more. Just because they were getting older. I would love to have back. At least I did learn. I don't sell, give away, trade or even loan any firearm. I did give my son one awhile back. I would love to have it back.
