Like many folks in IL who suffered in a right-denied state for so long, I've had a Pennsylvania CCW permit that the Commonwealth was decent enough to issue folks in right-denied territory for filling out a form and sending in $20. Since IL now is a shall-issue state, the laws of PA require non-residents to provide a copy of their CCW from their home state AND a new law in PA that started in 2011 requires permits to be renewed in person. Long story short, if I wanted my about-to-expire PA CCW renewed I would need to travel over 700 miles to do so. Well, I have done just that!

I was able to travel for free with a pal who flies a lot on business and have now visited the Sheriff's office in Centre Co. that on two prior occasions issued me a CCW permit for the asking when my home state denied me my basic rights. And while I really don't need the PA permit, I'm proud to have it in my wallet and would encourage others in my situation to renew theirs if they can make the journey.

Wait time in Wilkes-Barre was almost six hours when I went to renew at the beginning of the year -- and I showed up before the doors even opened. It was like the line wasn't even moving!

I suppose that we should be happy that people are applying in such great numbers.

I work in PA often, so I got mine. Offers up some additional states for me. GA, for one example.

It's county dependent. I live in Berks and it takes about 20 minutes. The Sheriff is nice enough to send a deputy out to a different municipality once a week on a rotating basis so you don't have to travel to the county seat. They also have a remote office at the Reading Airport that is open late. They really make it easy to acquire your permit.

I do agree about them looking like bad fake IDs. My previous one was literally printed out just like my drivers license. Nice thick plastic and looked very professional. My current one is just a laminated piece of card stock. It's official and that's all that matters :)

Maybe it's a budget thing?

I live in Lehigh county and put enough change in the parking metre to cover 30 minutes and renewed my permit 2 years ago. Folks were friendly and I was back to my car with 19 minutes to spare!

You would do better if didn't attempt to get it from Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware, Dauphin and Allegheny counties. I could be wrong about Dauphin County but the Capitol is there and it's liberal.

Pike County will only issue them to full-time residents of the county.

Maybe I'll try Wayne or Monroe.

That, and the fact that moving to laminated card stock cut the previous fee in half. At least that's what they told me when I renewed last month.

I couldn't care less what it looks like.

It's the same fee so I don't know why they told you that. And I care more about durability then looks. I'm hoping my current one makes it five years riding in the wallet. For never being taken out it's looking quite rough. They did give me a sleeve to keep it in which has definitely helped.

Denny Nau appears to be gone from Centre County. He issued my last 2 permits. A very obliging, pro gun Sheriff.

Where do I go now near the NJ-NY borders? Any County referrals?
My cousins live in Port Jervis,NY.

Try Monroe or Wayne county. They border Pike and might be more accommodating. I'm guessing Pike had some issues if they only issue to residents. Kind of a shame to hear because my family has had a home their since 1950.

Monroe is out as well. They require two "references" for residents. My how times have changed. The influx of people from a certain area has destroyed what used to be a great place.

I know it's not in the area you were looking for. But Berks county will issues to non residents as long as you have a CCW in your state.

I always have to shake my head at the enthusiasm for concealed carry and and the opinion that those who prefer open carry are stupid. While I think that we all should have the right to choose either, I think that licensed concealed carry was a solution to a problem that didn't exist and it was thought up by politicians that wanted to find a way to legally deny people their right to carry a firearm.

Mark my words, those of you who are so happy with the short wait times, with only having to drive (or fly) a short distance, and low renewal fees will eventually come to see that eventually the wait times will increase to the point that it wont be worth taking the time to get them, the distances to the limited number of places where the permit can be applied for will increase until it becomes too inconvenient to bother applying, and the costs will increase to the point of being too expensive for the average to person to apply.

There is a major issue when it comes to carry in PA. Your vehicle is considered concealment. So if you want to carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle you need the permit.

I am all for open carry. I openly carried from 18 to 21. The vehicle issue created a rather large issue for me and prevented me from carrying all the time. Constitutional carry is fine by me as well but it's not a reality here at the moment.
