Two and a half weeks ago on a Friday afternoon at 3:50 I walked into a bank to cash a check. But before I entered, outside the bank I noticed a car in the parking lot right outside the bank door, not parked in a spot, but in the parking lot in a "ready to roll" manner.

"Someone's in a hurry," I thought, without taking that thought to its logical conclusion. So I continued walking towards the door thinking about my plans for the evening.

Three steps into the bank lobby I noticed that everyone was down on the floor. Closest guy to me turns, points at the door, and mouths the words, "go! go!"

I realized two things. This is NOT a drill (and hence the getaway car outside), and that the bad guy(s) inside the bank don't see me.

There's only one entrance into this bank, and I'm in it. I have my .38 revolver with five rounds of +p hollow tip, and while I am not Henry Bowman, I'm a pretty good shot.

That was my situation. What would you do?

I'll watch the responses, and then I will tell you what I did.

I would have stepped outside, disabled the getaway car and called the po-po. I don't see where forcing a shootout should the BG have a gun would serve any desireable end at that point. If people were dieing inside, the story would be totally different.

Slowly walk around the corner in the hopes that the getaway driver doesn't know you've made them, and pull out your mobile 'phone. Dial the Peelers.

Go out side with your cell phone and gun. Call the police and decribe who and what what you saw. tell the police that you are a CCW holder and see the get away car and here is the plate number. Do you want me to citizen arrest the driver? Be sure to make the call out of eye site of the driver.... Oh, no the driver saw you coming back out, he see's you making a call on your cell phone. He pulls out his gun.... No good can come from this....

Jamb the door handle with a broom or whatever. No, that will cause an hostage stand off and some shootings, not good....

Shoot out the tires.... NO,the driver will return fire....

Walk up to the robber and give him your wallet and then shoot him.... No then your the aggressor.....

Now, most liberals would lie on the ground, cry like a baby, and wet their pants....Maybe not in that order....

Hell, I don't know..... what did you Do?????

MM has hit it on the head. Get out. Clear the area. Call the cops and ID the car. Hope they're smart enough to wait for the robbers to get out into the car so the bank customers don't become hostages.

Wait for them just outside the door, and as they walk out, shoot each in the back of the head. Take the money and get out of Dodge.

In reality, I would say call the cops and get a very detailed description of the getaway vehicle. Keep your weapon ready in case they decide to start shooting.

Follow the bad guys, shoot them, take the money, retire.:D Really get back out the door if possible, hide and call 911, and have gun ready to shoot back, only til the cops arrive.

if you can safely dis-engage, get the hell out of there. Find cover (NOT CONCEALMENT), call 911, and if one of the sons of bitches gets near you, drop him. Otherwise be a good witness and stay the hell out of it.

He tells me to skedaddle, I'll skedaddle. Get to a safe place, call the police. Be a good witness. You don't want to play Supercop and you don't want to create a hostage situation.

shoot the pricks some places might give you a reward for stopping a robbery :D

On that note I smell a funk....and it isn't the cheese I'm nibbling.

not a life or death situation (so far) from the way you tell it...would call the cops, if you had a cell and take cover.

Did you maybe shoot yourself in the back of the head for carrying such a dreadfully underpowered revolver and no spare ammo?

That .38 always seems like enough in your pocket until you really need it!

call the 911 and let them know whats going on and write down the plate number and give it to them, have your handgun ready to go and find a good place to hide in the parking lot so that you can see which way the car goes. Hope none of the people inside say anything about my being there, the robber might decide to take hostages. You are not the police and I don't think that the real police would appreciate any type of vigilante super hero stuff... just get yourself out of there.

Let the robber go without incident

If I found out at that moment it was a bank robbery, my adrenaline would kick in just like what happens to the police, but I would be extra careful now not to let my instinctiveness at that moment dictate the outcome. Though the survival instincts are high, I'd be digging awfully deep for rational solutions. The answer would probably be, "Don't try to stop this thievery, especially when it's not your personal loss that's at stake".

From that point forward, it's impossible to tell you what I would do or could have done. There are way too many possible scenarios. The best thing to do would be to watch over yourself and others knowing you could intervene with lethal measures if needed.

You're holding out, waiting to tell us how you held the bandit at gunpoint until the police arrived and took him into custody without incident, right? JK

if it's a posted bank

call them up and tell them you would like to intervene but you don't want to break their rules:neener:

In Reno afaik it's perfectly legal to carry in a bank

step outside. let them take the money get the plate numbers and bes description you can. dont draw or otherwise engage unless violence unavoidable and is in self defense, defense of another. the banks insured so all the accounts will be unaffected. better to let the police track these guys than widow your wife and leave your kids fatherless, just cause you always wanted to be in a HEAT style shoot out
