I want to buy a American made high end safe. Does anyone know if Brown or Graffunder safes use U.S made steel. I think they are made in America but not sure about the steel.

I do not know if they use U.S. made steel or not, but you can always check with them to find out. I would be interested to know if they do.

With only two foundries left in America, I doubt if anyone uses American made steel. Good luck and please share your findings with us. Like you, I try to buy American.

Fort Knox uses American made steel.
Although they can make an upgraded safe using 1/4 inch steel for the body at the end of the day the Graffunder or Brown will probably be a fair bit more secure.
I say this from recent pictures I have seen of the bolt work and support of the bolt work behind the door as well as the relocker system.
Price wise I think the best buy would be the Amsec RF which is a TL-30 gun safe.
All of these safes are really heavy as in well over a ton.

I would give Terry a call at Sturdy Safe. I believe he is still using only US made steel and components. When I bought my safe I wanted to buy American.
Sturdy is Red White and Blue, well actually my safe if grey and black but the company is all American. I consider my Sturdy high end without the high end price tag. I also understand that your mileage may vary.

Good Luck with your research.

Since you're in Austin, you might give Security Products a call as they are just outside of Waco in Elm Mott. They make their safes there, but can't verify where the steel is from.

Good question, I'm curious as well. I'm not sure where their steel comes from but I'm totally happy with my Graffunder. Only complaint is the price.

With the recent buy American move in our country, I think it would be a big selling point if the manufactures listed if they used American made steel. Certainly something to think about. I purchased mine from Superior Safe company, they are owned by Champion, they are made in the USA but I have no idea of where the steel comes from.

I am curious enough to send each manufacturer that says they are made in America an email asking if the steel they use is made in America, if not what is the country of origin of their steel. It will be interesting to see what kind of answers I get. I will post the results when I get them.

I don't know if they would even know. The company I buy steel from has never said where it comes from, and I have never asked. I simply tell them what I need, and it's delivered.

My only complaint with the "buy American" safe buyer, is that most of everything else they have is not made in the US. Yet for some reason they are making some sort of stand when it comes to safes. I just don't get it.

Even if you do find a US made safe, with US made steel, it is likely to have other foreign parts on it. The most obvious will be the dials/dial rings/keypads/etc. that are made overseas. Also, don't forget the wood, fabric, fasteners, and other items that go into building a gun safe.

To top it all, has anybody ever been to one of the safe factories out in Utah? Those safes may be US made, but the people making them may not be. ;)

Granted, it's old news, but I have heard that not much has changed.

An $80,000 fine has been levied against a Provo business whose owner admitted to concealing information about two dozen undocumented immigrants working at the company.

U.S. District Judge Paul Cassell imposed the fine Tuesday against Champion Safe Inc. Owner Ray Crosby pleaded guilty in November on behalf of the company to a single count of harboring illegal aliens

Also, a month before the raid, Crosby admitted to immigration officials he suspected that as many as half of his approximately 150 employees were undocumented immigrants.

With just about everything you see in stores nowadays with that made in china label and our economy in the tank, people would rather purchase something made here, with american jobs. As far as somethings not being made here well look no further than Harley Davidson, all american motorcycle right? Not so fast, many of the components are imported. The point is why spend your money on something that can be made here, but it was made in china or lord knows where. We want to spend our money on items made here, right at home in the good ole USA! When I started my search for my gun safe (aka RSC) my number one priority was that it be made in the USA. I am now on that bandwagon to the point where I will spend a few extra dollars just to purchase an item that was made in the USA over a lower priced like item that was made somewhere else.

Update on American Steel, So far I have heard from one company, Visalia out of Dexter CA, they claim their steel is american made as well. I think I will wait until I have them all and then post the results.

I completely understand that desire.

However, when a person walks into my shop to inquire about an American made safe, and they're wearing foreign shoes, foreign pants, foreign shirt, a foreign watch, foreign sun glasses, driving a foreign car, looking at a safe for their foreign guns, it's hard to take them seriously.

I sell safes from all over the world. All of the best safes are made overseas. There are a handful of well built US made safes, but not as many as you may think. Gun safes are a slightly different story.

On top of it all, you may be buying a US made product built using illegal labor. I'd say you'd be better off just deciding exactly what you need, and buying it regardless of what the sticker on the door says.

I have gotten a surprising number of replies so far, I copy and paste the results within the next few days. I post exactly what was sent to me, one them was rather interesting to say the least.
