Or the FNS-40
FN-FNS-9.jpg

Shoots like a 9mm in my hands. Accurate, well built, external safety, mags hard to find/expensive but you get three AND it has factory night sites.

Love this gun.

If you like the Shield, the M&P 40 has an option for an external safety. Not all that popular an option, but your dealer could order one.

I'm leery of the FNP-FNS-FNX why such minor changes and incompatible mags (at least between FNP & FNS) in such a short time frame?

Correct on both points. Here it is...

Another good point. I suspect their next model, which should be released shortly, will be the FNG.;)

Ruger SR40 or FN FNS-40. We have both and we really like both. YMMV

I received my two FN factory FNX/FNS 40 14 round magazines from CDNN yesterday ... $29.99 each and they function perfectly. You've got to pay S&H of course but that's true of all websites pretty much.

What other requirements? Steel, aluminum, polymer frames? A certain price point? New or used? There are literally more options than you can shake a stick at. The above posters have pointed out several fine options

If I liked thumb safeties, I'd be carrying an M&P. It manages the .40 very well, and beats any auto that isn't a Glock or 1911 in terms of market support. The trigger is poop in dry fire, but doesn't bother me a bit in live fire. The grip ergonomics are outstanding. Arredondo makes mag extension baseplates for M&Ps. Basically, it has everything going for it.

I forget the name of the company but I remember seeing ads for a company that would add a thumb safety to the side of a Glock.

[The FNX40] shoots like a 9mm in my hands
+1

I've shot only a few different handguns in 40/357 SIG. Cougar, Glock, XD. The FNX40 is the lightest out of them all and it shoots the softest to me. It has very little muzzle flip, either, esp compared to the XD. I'm not suggesting it doesn't have other issues, but this gun is a shooter. Fast and accurate.

They make it without the thumb safety...

m&p would be the logical choice since it has the safety just like the shield and is made by the same company. others would be sr, fns/fnx, hk usp/p30 although the last 3 are decocker safeties

Indeed, sir. I've fired them more than a few times. I specified "if I liked safeties", because that would push me to the M&P, instead of my preference, the Glock 23 Gen 4 or Glock 22 Gen 4. I consider the M&P to be just as good, but prefer the size envelope of the 23.
