Look around for good used rifles; I passed on a beautiful Winchester model 70 Super Grade .30-06 a couple of years ago for $900. I just didn't have the money. I really regret not figuring out a way to buy it. It was the most beautiful rifle I have ever seen.
I'll probably catch hell for this but the Savage 114 American classic actually has a beautiful high luster blue and American walnut stock with ebony tip. I have one and it shoots lights out as well as it's well within the $1k range your looking at.
While I realize that Rugers M77's are not considered "classics" this one is a dandy. I purchased this one in 270 Win about 10 years ago NIB at Cablea's on a closeout. Apparently Ruger made a run with high grade Circassian walnut they used on there African models. Anyways I kick myself for not buying the other 2 they had in 30-06 and 338WM. This particular rifle will rival any Win M70 Super Grade I have seen in fit, finish and shoot ability.
Here are a few shots under different lighting conditions..........
Just saying that there might be some out there for sale. Also have purty Coopers and Kimbers but they are not in your budget.
Yet another vote for the Winchester M70....Sporter or Featherweight. I have one of the FN Super Grades in .30-06 and intend to pick up a nice Featherweight in .270 sometime in the near future.
I really like Weatherby bolt action rifles. You will be hard pressed to find a better looking rifle. Plus Weatherby has the sub MOA guarantee. I have a Browning BAR that is chambered in 30/06. The Safari Grade rifles have a steel receiver. The rest of the BAR family has an aluminum receiver. If you have a change of heart and decide you need a magnum caliber get a Safari Grade. The aluminum receiver works well for 30/06. I have a Belguim made BAR in 30/06, it has never let me down. In fact, I cannot recall the rifle ever malfunctioning. For hunting purposes the BAR is accurate enough. I have not seen many shooters than can shoot a 2" group standing, unsupported. The BAR is much more accurate than 2"
I also vote for a vintage Model 70 !
Be prepared to spend about a grand or so though.
The good thing is, you'll have an excellent, rugged rifle and a superb shooter.
30-06 are almost the most plentiful for sale almost everywhere. Lots of choices to be sure.
I have 2 M70s in 30-06, one a push feed and one a control feed. I had a Voere years ago with double triggers, that was a nice one also. I've come very close to buying a Sako or two through the years as well.
If I was shopping for a wood stocked one; I'd wait until I found the nicest stock on one. The M70 "Classics" from the mid 90s usually had super nice figured stocks. Some Kimbers have really nice stocks. Coopers, while higher than your budget, would be worth saving a bit longer for.....
Surprised there's only been one other mention of the old chain store mausers. Hard to get more classic than that and when you find one it's rarely more than $300.
Seen some Parker Hales that could really shoot as well as some well done military sporters, I've got one from Argentina that must have been done by one of the great playing smiths. 25-06 with 6x Leupold. Probably one of my favorites in my classic category.
Sounds like the Model 70 is extreme consensus...
I had one a while back that was beautiful and very cheap ($450) but it was chambered in 243 WSSM. A cartridge that looked like such a winner but was a huge pain to reload for....
I will see if I can find any M70's in town that I can look at.
Mausers,Springfields.etc.
In my "custom rifle" stockmaking days (Trinidad), my compadres decided that if you made a stock from a blank and the rifle shot as good as a factory Model 70 , you were successful at least in the accurate rife mode.
