IAB 1863 Sharps...problem

I just got my used IAB Sharps today...in general it looks good (bores good) but I noticed two things...first...there seems to be play in the breech but with hammer down..it locks up tight...is this normal...second..when cocking the hammer it will not go into safety mode but will cock completely back...is this a problem with the safety noch in the hammer or something else...any help would be appreciated...

Just an update.....I was able to get the safety noch to work sometimes....this has double triggers and I wonder if the adjustment screw for the trigger has any affect on this....

I suppose it could, since incorrect trigger adjustment will keep the gun from cocking correctly.

There is a seller on ebag that has reprints for Sharps manuals these are for the cartridge rifles but should help with the problem you mention. Use sharps rifle manual to search.
