I assume the man with the pistol we are talking about is an Afghan (I don't know if that is the correct terminology) soldier? I guess we chose the Sigma as the pistol to supply them with. Good choice, inexpensive and reliable.

In the picture, is the pistol just srapped to his chest (with a spare mag) by a couple of velcro straps?

Just from my perspective:

1) Seems like a bad idea because it doesn't look like it's in a spot easily accessible with the shooting hand.

2) Seems like a bad idea because it doesn't look very secure.

3) Seems like a bad idea because the spare mag will most likely have to be handled as well as the firearm. Which hand to hold the magazine after the velcro is released? Most likely not the firing hand, so I'm guessing the weak hand. Must be some pretty good one handed shooters in the Afghan Army.

4) Evidently, we're able to supply them with firearms that have a fairly complicated production process, but unable to do this with even the cheapest holsters with the simplest process.....OR.....

5) The soldier in the photo has elected not to wear a holster and has purposefully chosen to carry in such a manner .....which means.....

6) We can supply them with top of the line crap but we aren't training these guys very well....which means...

7) What is the point of supplying them with top of the line crap if we can't get them to use it effectively?

Hopefully, it's just this one guy. But something tells me..........

The Afghan National Army adopted the SW9VE as their official sidearm back in 2006 I believe (could be off on the year). Contrary to what gets kicked around gun forums, it's a very reliable duty gun and has worked well in the field.

Aww, I thought it would be more unusual!

Yeah definitely a Sigma 9VE. Unloaded, stuck into the straps with the magazine.

If I remember right, and I might be wrong, the Afghanis get the sigma while Iraq's army is getting Glock 19s.

I seem to remember some Ruger P-95's being bought for some of the Afghan or Iraqi security forces.

Nick5182,
The Iraqi police got issued Glock 19s. The only pistols that I have seen in the Iraqi Army were carried by their officers and most of those were personally owned. Saw one Iraqi Lt with a Sig 228 and one that had a pearl handled S&W .38 revolver. In Iraq, the police are usually more heavily armed than the Army, at least that was the case near Tuz/Sul..

Here is my take:

He is visiting a US base. Was told to unload his weapon and keep it in plain view. I'll bet this is not his day-to-day carry.
