Ideal weapons for college students, in class.

D cell mag lights do not work very well as a club. Get one in your hand and watch the angle of your wrist when you try to strike some one in the head. They are great fro strikes to the lower body... not so much for anything else.

I would also shy away from the bowflex rods that are cut down... they would be very hard to explain.

thats great if you just happen to be in your car with the trunk open...

I just put mine in my hand and watched the angle of my wrist. I don't understand at all why you think a D cell mag light does not make a good club. Please explain in more detail.

Look more closly at it, you want your wrist to be strait( with the rest of your arm) when you make contact. Other wise your losing alot of power and more importantly potentally damaging yourself.

Since your having trouble seeing it, try this.

Stand up stait, put your arm out parrel with the floor. Place the mag light in your hand so its vertical. Lower your arm until the mag light is at 45 degrees. Is that anywhere close too where some ones head would be if they were attacking you?

As I said mag lights are great for striking the lower body, they just don't have the length need to be effectivly ( or safely for that matter)used as a batton.

I'd submit that the greatest weapon available to you will be/should be ...rage.
You must be willing to visit great unkindness upon your attacker.
Firearms falsely foster an image of one step 'removed' if you will. The idea
that an altercation will be ended before making physical contact with the threat. At a distance measured in yards! Truth is, most likely NOT.
Jeff Cooper speaks of righteous rage and sudden violence in his book "The Principles of Personal Defense".
Paraphrasing the Colonel, a threat should be met with an overwhelming and immediate response.
It's not so much as to what weapons you have at your disposal,
it's instead your willingness to fight.

I have never clubed anyone (I have clubed to death a few animals) and have never studied or trained using a club. But I always thought that if I hit somebody hard with my maglight which has three D batteries in it, its going to hurt them bad, especially if I hit them in the head. Even if I hit them hard on their arm I think it would disable that arm.

I don't understand why your wrist is supposed to be straight or you loose a lot of power, and I don't understand why it would damage me.

Too much over annalizing, just hit the ------.

Man has been hitting things and people with clubs of one sort or another since the cave. Don't think about it, just do it. Its one of the most instictive things a human can do.

TAB,

How is a maglight not just a metal stick?

it is, its just too short to be used as a effective club on the upper body. I'm not saying it won't work, Just that I like my wrists.

Any besides, how are you going to get caught with a pistol in your pocket. Last time I was in school, there were no pat downs or security check points to get into class. The only time anyone would know that you had a gun was if you had to use it, and at that point, who cares what the academic repercussions are?

The concept of committing a felony, and a pretty serious one at that, based on the probability of not getting caught is a pretty stupid way to go about doing things. By this logic, I should go ahead and drive if I have had 5 or 6 beers because I only live a few blocks from the bar, and it is unlikely I will get caught, particularly if I use side streets.

Sorry dude, I am sure you are a perfectly good guy in many respects, but this is just bad, bad advice.

Really bad advice.

Obedience to the Rule of Law is what makes us a society. I'm not talking about obeying the segregation laws of the early to mid 20th Century or jaywalking laws here, I'm talking about the concept of laws, important ones. I agree, a person in this country should have the right to defend themselves. That doesn't mean we're a lawless society where might makes right. For good or bad, our society has determined that there are some things that can't be done. Committing a felony is one of them. It's something that could completely destroy any future a person plans to have with that college deree. It's been a while since I read the rules of this forum, but I believe it's against the board rules to suggest to someone here that they break the law. not only is is against the rules, it's really stupid.

To the OP, there's a lotof really good advice in this thread. Please look it over and decide for yourself what is best. I'd really suggest reading a little about conflict resolution, the aforementioned book The Principles of Personal Defense is a good one, in fact I'd recommend several things that Jeff Cooper has written.

i carry oc spray and a little metal pocket stick. blind them and stab them in eyes/face area with pocket stick

A sturdy bike lock in the pocket ... ..I forgot I had it there. Actually you can be charged with assault with a dangerous instrument if you strike someone with anything in today's society, the police don't care about your self protection they represent the order of the State and everything they do flows from that. Stay safe- good luck trying to. Just my opinion.

I'm in college as are some of the other people in this thread.

In my car I keep a wooden baseball bat up front, which was just accidentally left up there from batting practice one day, but when I was (nearly) mugged, and used it to defend myself, it found a new home in that exact spot.

whenever I'm not in my car?

Gerber Paraframe clipped on my pocket, a hard cased pen, and a carabiner key clip, which makes a nasty set of knuckles.

I guess I could always throw a tin of Skoal at 'em too, if need be.

I have often suggested a full water bottle. Nothing special, it doesn't have to be metal or frozen, just a full water bottle. 2 cell AA flashlights are also good to have because they make good kubatons and are handy to illuminate dark areas in parking lots or get you out of buildings when the power fails.

p.s i dont recommend the baseball bat even though it brings back good memories alot of my friends have gotten into trouble with the cops just getting pulled over and them seeing it!!

I have a couple gloves as well as a number of balls rolling around the floor of my car, seeing as how I still play/practice year round.

admitingly it probably would be easier for me than most college students.

Most of my club type weapons are left in the car. I have a pool stick and baseball bat in the truck. My bowflex "hood prop" rests in between the seats, extending into the back floorboard. If I get pulled over and questioned about the club, so be it. Police know that people carry things for protection, and they've asked me about it before.

One thing I never leave the house with is a knife. I have a little Schrade X-Timer I carry now. Seems to keep a decent edge, and I only use it for cutting cloth, plastic, or cleaning my nails.... I am, however, going to look in depth about the longest legal knife I can carry concealed. I'm thinking it's around a 4 inch blade, but not sure in VA. Anything over that length would have to be open carry.

About the MagLite issue.... I don't really care who you are and what training you have, a MagLite will come in handy when needed. Truckers carry these things for protection, and THEY WORK. The wrong wrist angle blah blah blah...only if you're in a training class. Given the real life situation and a pissed off person with a large knife or gun, I can make it work pretty darn good. I wouldn't stop unless I couldn't recognize them anymore. Which also leads me to another thing. The person who said something to the extent of "who cares if you have a gun and use it when the time is right, no one is gonna care." That may be true, but in today's world, it only takes one person to say something to the right person to get your butt thrown under the jail.

my friend's a culinary arts student and as a bag full of knives. i just got my utility knife. the school andbook says no prijectile weapons. i think im safe from anyone caring
