I was playing around with my computer and came up with this the other day. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking it may make my HS less of an issue in my head. Took a class on IDPA and the instructor indicated that COM and HS were really not all that different in target area...seems like he was right.

I'll be curious if any of you get any value from trying this one...

Safe shooting,

That is a good idea - thanks for posting! I have been making my own targets by just drawing a thick-lined 8" circle or a 6" square on a sheet of paper. After I drew the first ones I could just run off copies on my home printer/copier. I never thought of combining the two like you did.

One thing I noticed is that the circle and square are about 1/4" short of 8" and 6". This is probably a good thing for practicing though as it will force you to be that much more accurate. When it comes match time, the actual targets will be that much bigger! :)

Thanks,

Yeah, I built them in PowerPoint and I think that something like "optimize for slide-show" may have corrupted the printed size...also, you might have to mess around with IE to get it "right-sized" for printing.

Enjoy!

I saved it as a JPG and then converted that to a PDF. The PDF renders it pretty well and just takes 1/4" off each of the objects. I'll attach it below.

I've been using the same 1/3 IDPA version as GRD:

http://glockfaq.com/targets/competition/idpa.pdf

HS = Head Shot :)

I've also played around with 1/4 IDPA Targets using similar technique as the original one posted.

I like the 1/3 Popper and 1/3 D1 Tombstone too...I've been using the 1/3 D1 to really stress accuracy as part of Classifier Stage 1 practice...it gives pretty good immediate feedback on group size also.

p.s. The PPT version prints out pretty close to dead on for measurement...maybe something weird happened when I converted to JPEG?

If you feel really adventurous...try this one :D! I've only tried it once with, er...less than satisfactory results...I may bring it out again for giggles in the next few weeks.

I never realized that the headbox was so big compared to the -0 zone. Damn optical illusions screwing with my head.

Which is EXACTLY why I made the target!

If I can convince myself that these are roughly equivalent sized objects to aim it...watch out for my scores in Stage 1 :D!!

I can also be less intimidated during some our scenario stages at the club when only the HS is available for a hit.

GRD & CZ52Guy:

Your targets appear to be slightly out of date. The A-Zone is somewhat higher on the newer IDPA targets.:(

That could be very true for the 1/3 targets. I had heard that the A-Zone was repositioned. I think for dry-fire or precision live-fire practice at 7-yards, the target GRD posted will work pretty well (I've gotten good results by so doing). I converted it to a PPT file at one point...I can compare with one of my full size cardboard targets and I may play with it to see if I can make it more vertically correct.

Stay safe,

HS vs. COM

Cool target combining the HS with COM. Of course, one of the difficult things about head shots vs. COM is that if you miss a HS (over the top or either side) it's a Mike, whereas for COM, it's generally just a down-1 hit.

Yeah, but that's all in your mind!

Does this translate...it's only an issue if you miss ;)?

I've been trying to work in more HS as part of scenario shooting to build up my confidence and challenge my accuracy. If I more routinely make optional HS at 5-7yds in a club match, then the mandatory HS won't be as daunting. We had a 12yd HS - at least 2 on paper from behind cover at last match. I was able to shoot a nice 3 shot group of about 2"...now if I could only do that consistently!

Stay safe,
