I was going to do just one knife but I couldn't do it. I could however do two, a fixed blade and a folder.

For me those would be a buck 192 and a case jumbo stockman.

So what knives would everyone else choose if limited to only two?

I would want a large knife for doing all the heavy work. Something like a BK&T BK-9, that way you could baton wood to make a fire.

Then a smaller knife to do all the fine work, maybe a SAK or ESEE 3/4.

Can the knife be part of a multitool? If so Leatherman Wave for the folder and an older made in Seki SOG Government for the fixed blade. Edit to add: I chose the SOG because I already have it.

The multi tool question. I was wondering how long it'd take for that to come up. My opinion is, a wave counts as a knife, but a leatherman original doesn't. Reason being, when I carried a wave, I used the knife as my primary blade. But now that I carry an original, I rarely use the knife, but I often use the other parts of the tool.

So for the sake of sanity and to keep hard feelings at bay, we will exclude multi tools from the choices. You get to keep your tool of choice and it doesn't count as one of the two knives.

Unless of course you want your tool to be your choice. We aim to please.

That would depend... what is going on that I could only have two?

One would certainly be a Morakniv Companion, which I would argue is likely the best practical all around knife ever made
At about $12each (case price) I should really be allowed several in place one of my two choices ;)

Number two would really depend

I agree, SAK's are the original multi tool and (some) would be eliminated by the original question.

So, let's keep them in the realm as they're worth it, as are other multi tools that have multiple blades and tools. Some of which can be used to fix other knives.

SAK is a knife no question bout it.

Leatherman pst is pliers with a knife blade and tools in the handle.

Wave blurs the lines a bit.

Can you replace them if broken or damaged? That would determine my choices I think.

There are many modern knives that are no longer in production that we have and would choose, Gladstone Marbles Ideal anyone?, and many not so modern, Colclesser Kephart, that we might wish to have as a choice. Why limit yourself to something currently in production that would be replaceable in an "ideal..." thread? Certainly no Excalibur or other fantasy or knives of legend, but any real knife that you could currently buy but not replace makes sense.

Yes you can replace them. If you can find one. I wouldn't have any problems replacing my buck 192.

I don't mean to imply it's an end of the world knife pick or something. Just, you have to pare down to only two knives. And or, you can have any two even if you don't have them currently. But only two.

Which two?

Fallkniven S1
Benchmade Griptilian

I'd have to replace my current Griptilian, which is a partially serrate tanto, with a plain blade. But it'd be those two.

I would likely rank toughness and corrosion resistance higher in my selection criteria if the scenario doesn’t allow replacing said knives.

Sure...ease of sharpening under field conditions might also be a prime consideration, though. 5160 or the equivalent isn't the latest and greatest, but can be sharpened with many things, if needed.
