If you could have only 2 knives?

Sure...ease of sharpening under field conditions might also be a prime consideration, though. 5160 or the equivalent isn't the latest and greatest, but can be sharpened with many things, if needed.

I have found that I prefer easy to sharpen steels over those with insane edge retention. I am developing a preference for balance over extremes.

I prefer ease of sharpening over edge holding. I also prefer a knife with a natural handle material. Bucks laminated wood is as unnatural as I will go.

Thinking about this is more challenging than I thought. In my daily pedestrian lifestyle a folding knife is useful where a fixed is less so. In survival-camping type modes I'd want the bigger bowie and small hunter. Three knives would be my pick. A folder, small fixed hunter and big one.

For practicality these two of mine though the lower fixed is not how I'd set it up for utility use, more like a G10 handle.

I always wanted to try one of the sharpfingers that has the drop point blade. Kinda down turned handle. I had a standard sharpfinger a while and really liked it.

I'd take a big (9-19" inch) blade, and a small 2.5-4" blade. I have lots of both, and all would work.

An especially good combo is a ~9ish Camp Defender II and a Spyderco Endura, Manix 2, or Manix 2 XL. Again, though, lots of choices, almost none bad. I have a 16.5" HI WWII model kukuri that would make a good companion to something like my GE. (Shown here with trainer and ARK trainer.)

If fighting was definitely likely, as opposed to just life outdoors, I'd probably choose a bit smaller knife than the kuk, like my large but light EK45. That's a lot of knife for just over half a pound. I like knives more than most folks, but if I have to choose between a good knife and a short sword with trouble coming, I'll take the knife and 3 more mags of ammo over the sword!

They made the drop point with a gut hook too, best I recall.

Looked it up, it's model 158ot

I don't care for gut hook knives either. I have one, a schrade 143ot. We mostly use it for a kitchen knife. My wife loves it. The handle ergonomics and blade geometry make it perform well on meat.

I'm looking to acquire the 141ot, drop point non gut hook.

I've never had a buck 124. I have handled one in store though.

I have had a 15" Bowie though and loved it. Though it isn't as useful as a smaller knife or a hatchet. It spoke to me though.

I just realized I say though a lot, though I ain't sure why.
