If you could only use one handgun for Concealed Carry and all your hunting...

I don't use any - this was just a hypothetical answer to hypothetical question - there are no limitations on number of firearms owned in the Czech Republic (only higher criteria for safe storage of more than 2/10/20), so I don't need to worry about having to choose one for both CC and hunting - not that I would ever hunt...

I carry CZ 75 Compact D ("PCR"). I will try to find some pics of back-packs online when I have more time.

The difference between theory and reality is that in theory something works, in reality it does not.

I was hoping this was the first time somebody made the 'long gun in a pack' theory actually work. Maybe next time.

Perfect packin pistol.

.577 Howdah pistol. Definitely. Might be kinda hard to find though........

I said I personally don't use it, but due to CC being the only option the private security in the Czech Republic do so. And so do governmental bodyguards (you will usually see 2 by the protected person and one with a backpack a bit further).

Plain cloth governmental bodyguards use them here for their Scorpions (vz.61/Evo 3) and HK MP5s. Since also private security must carry concealed, they also use either back pack or overcoats in case they carry SBRs (for high profile bank transports and similar).

Berger,

The only thing that makes these "One gun" threads worth reading is a post like yours. Real life experience, not guesses, opinions and stabs in the dark.

What were the pistols you and your wife using to such good effect?

Thanks.

We happened to use Sigs, but a buddy let me try his Beretta 92 9mm which had sufficient accuracy. Never liked the Glock. Maybe someone could reliably hit the smaller game with a Glock, but not me.

Thanks Berger. I'm sure a SIG would work.

I'm a Glock guy and have recently murdered three pocket gophers on a friends place for him. They were tunneling under his house. Two with a 27 and one with my 23.

Brian,

Now that is a versatile sixgun. Is that a Model 65 with a pencil 38 special barrel installed?

With that sort of range of loads how do you deal with differing points of impact?

Nice.

I would pick my 5" Ruger 1911. Adequate accuracy for hunting and definitely a man stopper. I don't think the 45acp is the best for hunting, but with +P ammo, I've no doubt it would take deer size game. Although I've never shot game with a 1911, I've heard it said the 185 grain +P is devastating. Anyway, for a one gun do-it-all handgun, I'd choose a 1911.

My second choice would be a Blackhawk in .44 Special. The .357M is of course the meanest, but I wouldn't want that if I had to choose one gun. It has too much blast and flash for me in a c/c weapon. If needed, follow up shots are difficult due to all that energy. I'm a fan of the .357, but not for daily carry.

Killed a squirrel this morning with my Smith 66-3 (loaded with. 38spcl ). Face shot at 30 feet - it'll do.

I guess I'd move somewhere else...somewhere that did not restrict my rights so severely.

And trust me, I do not take this lightly.

Given the fact that (unfortunatley) I have felt it necessary to look into this scenario a bit, I'm thinking that Italy, South Africa and maybe Costa Rica would be options if the USA should absolutely abdicate her position as the last bastion of gun rights. And that is not beyond plausibilty.
I am less than ten years from retirement age, and I have spent (what some might consider) an inordinate amount of time thinking about this...and so have some friends.

So maybe it a precisely ordinate amount of time.

Time will tell.
But remember that hindsight, while frequently vaunted as 20/20, is essentially worthless in the real world.

Well remember that there are other reasons than the government one could only own one gun or one pistol as specified in this thread.

Due to clever financial steps on my part when I was young twice I was reduced to one firearm for a time.

I do understand about the US becoming a gun free zone. Makes one shudder to think it.

...and hunting?

Revolver:

44 Magnum...S&W Model 629 with 4" barrel. I thought about the 5" barrel, but it's a stretch to carry. I can do it, but it's not comfortable.

Semi-Auto:

I'd likely choose a Glock 20. I'd use the standard barrel for self-defense and a 6" KKM barrel for hunting.

Another option would be to use a gun with a 460 Rowland conversion kit. The Glock 21, 1911 and other semi-autos can accept this conversion.

I like the Dan Wesson option mentioned early on. Of the handguns I actually have, I'd have to dust off the ol Ruger service six. with 4" barrel.

Frankly, I don't think the original question could possibly be serious, so I'll respond accordingly:

Italy and concealed carry? You must be joking! Don't know about the other two, but Italian may issue concealed carry is next to impossible to get for a regular guy. The only European countries with permissive may issue CC are Austria and Slovakia. (not to mention shall issue CC countries like the Czech Republic or Estonia)

Excessive Weapons Prohibitions?

Sounds like Europe is , at least 1/2 way there, re: possible/actual? ability to register & confiscate all the weapons.

Comments , please.

Europe is an entire continent. Which country or countries are you asking about, specifically?

And are you asking about registration, or confiscation?

Well...thank you. No offense taken. :)
I know very little about CC laws in other countries, but have been responding to posts from some of our international members for the last two years or so.

And what I have been able to glean, the countries that I posted are my current finalists. I will be happy to add Austria to the list. I am a lifelong motorcyclist, and living in the land that produces the KTM is not at all off-putting. Having Italy directly southward is a plus (as I own two Ducatis).

I have about ten years to retirement, and as I foresee the US to continue its dramatic decline to the extent that I will need to consider all options...

Please continue the conversation...

I would carry and hunt with any of my handguns. However, their suitability for either scenario would shift depending on which one I'm talking about.

Not counting my wife's PPK/S (*sigh*...I'm still trying to talk her into giving it back), I have 4 handguns:

Automag II (.22WMR)
Colt 1991A1 (.45acp)
Beretta 92FS (9mm)
Colt Peacemaker (.45 Colt)

I routinely carry my 1991A1 and would certainly use it for hunting. I wouldn't have any problems hunting small game and varmint with it at reasonable ranges.

I have hunted small game and varmint with my Automag II, and it's got a respectable accurate range. For a carry weapon, it's mighty slim and easy on the weight. Not what I'd prefer simply based on the caliber, but it would get the job done.

I've carried my Beretta and it's plenty accurate enough to hunt with. Larger capacity than either of my above examples, but a wider frame than either.

I haven't carried my newest baby, the Peacemaker, yet. I didn't get it with a mind to carry it concealed, but I suppose I could. It's proving to be plenty accurate enough for me to use for small game and varmint at reasonable ranges, but I'd have to say it's not nearly as concealable as my semi-automatics. But it's REALLY COOL LOOKING and that has to be considered as well!

Overall, I'd say it's down to the Automag II and the 1991A1, and the 1991A1 wins out because of the self-defense edge.
