If you could pick ONE rifle...

Man, I'd have a tought time deciding between my Garand or Romanian SKS. Both are rock solid reliable and battle proven. The SKS is lighter and has lighter ammo, but the Garand is harder hitting and more accurate.

I'll lead towards the Garand, favoring it's better accuracy, power and range. It's still light enough to to be handy.

DIS ONE!!!

For serious purposes shtf accurracy from concealment
Bolt action .308 sniper rifle 26" heavy barrel with a bipod and a real good scope and sling.

Like my savage .308 10 fp.

For hunting and defense / survival a remington 870 with a 22" barrel, rifle sights and swapable chokes.

Or a real good .22 for recreational purposes. :D

I'd have a hard time deciding between my Garand and VZ24. Although the Garand is clip-fed and has 8 shots, I find my self to be more accurate with the bolt-action Mauser.

But sheesh, either 8mm or .30-06 will ruin anyone's day!

There are so many variables and unknowns here. Am I gonna be hunkered down defending the castle? I'd want my Garand for massive hordes. I'm not likely to take long sniper shots that would draw attention, so I wouldn't need the .308 Savage 10fp with the Tasco 10x mildot

Or am I gonna be bugging out and on the move? In that case I might settle for my 10/22. I could carry lots of ammo, shoot and scoot, picking up weapons on the way.........:D

I don't have a lot of experience with rifles, so keep that in mind when I say that I would pick the M-14. I think it's easier to clean than the AR-15 and packs a harder punch. I like that round for some reason. The situation I was thinking of was everything rolled into one. You get stuck somewhere or home, but you might have to go on the run and hunt with the same rifle you use for self defense.

Currently, I only have a Bushmaster carbine A3 and some .22lr rifles. I have to say though, that an M1A1 or an AR10 would be my ideal choice.

what would it be? Any SHTF scenario you could come up with, what one rifle would you choose to be your defense and why?

A bolt action in a caliber that I either reload for or is common. I want something reliable, reasonably accurate, and rugged. A bolt action, for me, fits the bill.

In my neck of the woods, it would have to be just a plain old SKS with as much ammo as I can carry. If it is that bad, the bayonet may just come in handy...

I'll take my '03 Springfield.

Excellent rifle, light enough to carry but heavy enough to tame the recoil of a .30-06. Bolt action--don't have to worry about gleaned hunting rounds bending or breaking the op rod, or gas port pressures. And, accurate to keep 5 rounds in a 2-inch group, centered, at 225 yards with iron sights! This, from a original issue rifle with a barrel date of 1918.

No. 4 MkII Enfield....

It's extremely rugged, has good sights, is fast to cycle, fast to load and accurate by military rifle standards.

The .303 is a good cartridge as well.

Powerful enough to get the job done, but not so much recoil as to induce fatigue.

My example has a very nice trigger as well.:D

If it was a riot/earhquake/civil unrest type situation, I'd take one of the bushys for the high ammo capacity and light weight.

If it was a flat out TEOTWAWKI, I want my remington 700 BDL 30-06. I'm goona need all the range and power possible, and will already be in "make every shot count" mode, so high ammo capacity is a moot point.
