Bailing out Custer could well lead to him running for office, even president.
Do we want him in charge of our history?

To the original post, there are better investments. The problem is bringing enough usable money or valuables. If I were free to go back to anytime in the 20 th century. I would take some old silver coins and buy the first Superman, DC, Batman, etc. comics. I would also get uncirculated rolls of rare coins, such as 1916-D dimes or the like. 1909 S -VDB pennies, etc. With those now, I could buy any gun I wanted.
There was an episode of the newer version of "The Outer Limits" back in the 90s that did a variation of that story. The variation was that the future guy ended up replacing JFK at the plaza in Dallas and JFK went back to the future and became a history instructor.
I'm with @Aarond on this one. Go back and help rewrite the 2nd Amendment in such a way that it could not be circumvented, violated, or abused in the current manner.
A 7mm-08 barrel on a Model 88 would be awesome! A .358 barrel on one would be pretty sweet too, IMO.more likely get a replacement barrel chambered in 7-08 Rem.
I want to go to the future.
If you read much speculative physics the general consensus (among people even willing to entertain discussing fringe stuff like this) is that time travel into the future is much more likely to be a possibility than travel into the past. As a gross simplification the flow of time only moves in one direction. The past no longer exists to travel to, but the future does.I want to go to the future.
I would go back to 1776. and show our Founding Fathers a tricked-out AR with high-cap mags, and show them articles on all of the mass-shootings since Columbine.
Then I’d show them how their (founding fathers) words are used to block reasonable gun control measures.
That’s all I’d do: show them the future of firearms. They are smart dudes, they could figure out better than I how to address the 2nd Amendment once they have the facts.
