If you were to purchase a NEW 30-30...

Id buy a new Marlin 30-30. Had lots of good luck with them. Keep looking at the used guns market. We have them at virtually every gun shop in my County. Just saying, there were a bazillion of the things made. I read new Winchester 94 is being made in Japan now. Probably priced accordingly too. Dont know I would chase one down though. For the same money you could prob get a pre 64 model 94. Havent tried Rossi or Mossberg. Good luck.

I'm another fan of used guns. Always plenty of 94s and Marlins in the used racks this time of year, just keep your eyes open. Marlins are my favs but Win is a fine gun. You might also want to consider a 336 in .35 Rem. That's a thumping little round!

Wow. No love for the Mossberg here, eh?

I've only seen one of them (and a few of the silly one with the rails and adjustable stock) but the only blued/wood one that I saw was actually fit/finished quite nicely, and seemed to be nice and smooth.
Really thinking about a Mossberg 464 30-30. Haven't handled one but I would like a new "1894 Win" style 30-30.

Thanks for the replies everyone,

Still looks like a used Marlin is my best bet, I'll just have to keep my eyes open for just the right one.

I own a few, but if I could get $415 for used lever funs around here I think I'd sell them. They are all made by Marlin.

I usually always buy used and would advise you to do the same, a prelock Marlin is a good choice. Pre 64 Winnies are nice but command a premium, never seen one for under 6 bills. Used marlins are beefy and very easy to work on. If I had to buy new, I would still go with the Marlin, because of ease of disassembly to slick up action. Henrys may be better, but I dont like pot metal, painted recievers and the brass ones are to guady for my taste.

The new Winchesters are built by Miruko in Japan, and are the same high quality as the Browning Citori shotguns they also make.

I would not buy a new one. Look for a nice older (pre 64) Winchester. Timeless classics. I have looked at a new Winchester 65 in .218 Bee though, very nice. Built by FN.

There are NEW Winchester 65s in 218 Bee available???

SC Shooter ... beautiful! nice buy there!
I agree with a used pre 64 Winchester Model 94 but I have drooled over these Henry Big Boys lately and they are a bit expensive. I wish I had the money to buy two. My pre 64 Win 94 is a 32 Win Spl.

you can find a decent used Marlin or Winchester for $400, you just have to be patient, the right one will come along when you least expect it.
Happened to me twice, one of each (5 years apart though). The first one (1980 Marlin)I was looking for, the second one (1974 Chester M-94)fell in my lap. :what:

sigsmoker is right, that's a dandy!!

It was $500, but it's now in my safe. A totally un-molested 1942 Win '94. Great blue, honest use on the stock, never drilled for any sights at all. Great shooter. Keep looking around - they're out there.

Don't forget to check out the pawn shops, you just never know.

I picked up a like new Winchester 94 a little over a year ago for $175.00 at my local shop.

I just don't see the point in spending the money for new when there are so many good used ones out there that are half the price. Plus they have character.

I I was buying new, I'd probably go for a Marlin, but I'd be very thorough in my examination of them. Buying a used rifle, it would absolutely be a Marlin.

I would not dismiss "used." Gun shows, private owners can be a good source .
Older ones ,in good condition are a better choice. IMO.

Here in Pennsylvania, good used Marlins with JM stamp are common. This local shop has several in 30-30 and all priced to sell. One rare model they have is the Sporting carbine in 32 Special. Every now and again a Marlin in 35 Remington comes up on the used rack but doesn't last long.

Hope this is helpful.
