New Marlin 30-30's: still up to snuff?

So what's the deal with the 'crossbolt safety'? Why is it an issue? Is it inferior to other types? What did they used to have? Thanks!

There isn't really any problems with a crossbolt safety, however many folks believe that you can accidentally engage the safety while hunting and risk loosing our quarry. While this may be a valid concern, it is easily remediated by a simple O-ring placed over the safety as a temporary (reversible) fix, or permanently with a safety delete kit. The older version did not have a safety at all, but you could simply place the hammer in half-cock to use for a safety (the new hammer is a rebounding type but you can still use it in this manner).

I picked up a 336W with scope, sling and soft case for $350US used with a box of ammo last year. It has a gold trigger and can make nice groups at 100 yards. The factory rings were cheap and were replaced.

I love my 336C from Cabelas. Gorgeous Wood. Accurate rifle. However, mine was $449. I think you may be talking about a 336W for $350. the main difference is the 336W stock is plain, while the 336C stock is made from very nice walnut. It would be worth it to upgrade unless you plan on beating the rifle to heck than I guess maybe not. But then again, I would much rather look at a beat up walnut stock much more than a beat up broomstick, but is just me.

If I ever get around to buying a lever gun, a Marlin 336 is the only one I want. The only time I've ever fired one, I was faster and more accurate with it than I was with my AK, and that was with only one tube of ammo and a bunch of rolling hedgeballs. :D
