I had mostly a hypothetical question tonight. Illinois requires a FOID card to buy ammunition. For those who reload, and live in Illinois, what is considered "ammunition" out of the four reloading components? I'd think the primer, but it really could be any of the four. Thanks.

I thought California was strict.

Keep your head low and your powder dry.

As far as I know, there are no restrictions on reloading components for Illinois. Some sellers may require a copy of the FOID card when you order.

I don't recall showing my FOID card for any components? In fairness, you get so desensitized to being asked for it, it's hard to remember.

It has been 4 decades since I was 'carded' to prove my age - lol

Tricky question since policies online vary so much - some ask for nothing before shipping, others want the FOID on file while still others won't ship to Cook County or even Illinois at all.

As I recall, for a local retail sale you should show a FOID for primers and powder - when they remember to ask.

Depends on where you live and who your dealing with. MidwayUSA refused to ship brass to Chicago.

Primer and powder purchases at Illinois retail outlets requires a FOID card.

Online purchases of ammo, primers or powder typically requires a faxed or mailed xerox of your FOID card. Some are picky about this, some aren't.

If you live in Cook County, you can get primers and powder via UPS, but not ammo.

If you live in Chicago, you are screwed in more ways than one.

It's a Firearms Owner ID card. Without it, in IL, you can't even legally hold a gun in a gun store.

Usually, you're asked to show the card before they hand you a gun to look at. With powder and primers, they ask to see it when you're paying for the stuff.

With bullets, it's hit or miss. Most times they don't even ask for it, since it's just metal bits until inserted into a case with powder and primer.

It's an infringement, no two ways about it. And it was the beginning of the problems IL gun owners have faced since its inception.

And now can you please explain why the good people of your state haven't elected new representation who will eliminate such foolishness?

We have PLENTY of legislators who illuminate it, what we need are ones to eliminate it - lol

Liberal gun hating Democrats and their powerful machine have run Chicago, and by extension the State, for over 40 years.

Entitlement recipients do not want to lose their handouts. Patronage hires do not want to lose their jobs in a regime change, payoff payers do not want to lose their sweetheart contracts.

Lots of reasons why the corruption continues unabated.

Asked to leave...

I was in Illinoise a few years ago and attempted to purchase some shot gun primers. As I walked into the gun store I was asked for my foid card. I said, "I don't have one", and was immediately asked to leave the premise. They were very polite about it; I explained I was from out of state; they explained that they couldn't keep track of which customers had cards and which didn't. End of story.

Oh, BTW, I've never set foot in IL since then, nor have I ever spent another dime in that country, even though it's cost me thousands of dollars not to. Good luck, ILLINOISe.

the problem with illinois is its really two states.... one is the state of chicago... everything else is DOWNSTATE... its a joke and why we have had crooks as govenors

Because the graveyards around Chicago are so well represented.

As a resident of Illinois and an individual that enjoys reloading but does not have a FOID card I can tell you that you can purchase the individual components without having a FOID card. I have been asked to show my card before when I purchase primers and powder but I very politely tell them that it is not required for purchase of either of those components since it is not ammunition. I have always walked away with the components that I required.

Your right, the foid act does define ammunition as a cartridge, and doesnt seem to regulate their components. Most big box stores or gun shops around me would demand a foid cards anyways.

I wish I could tell you, but Chicago pretty much drives the bus in IL. Let me put it this way. There are 102 counties in IL, 99 of them voted for Bill Brady.

Pat Quinn sits in the governor's chair, with only 3 counties voting for him.

That's IL in a nutshell. And heavy on the nuts.

They don't drive the bus..... THEY ARE THE BUS, THE DRIVER, THE PASSENGERS and the ENGINE.....

I live in SE illinois and people in the CHICAGO LAND are don't even now anything wouth of I80 exist....

On topic, I have never been FOID "Carded" for any components, online or otherwise.

I have been to gun shows in Indiana that once they found out we were from Illinois all but refused to sell us anything....

Myself I don't mind some of the laws but having someone actually tell me that they would rather NOT sell me something is a little ridiculous..

I left Illinois seven and a half years ago.
I miss everything except the absolute corruption of the state, county and city government, and worse yet, the widespread acceptance of that corruption.

I am approaching retirement age, and would love to move back, but as long as that corrupt system exists, IL is one place that is stricken from my list.

Good news--WI has recently passed concealed carry, so WIO just got back on the list. Maybe there will be hope for IL one day. I'm thinking five to ten years from now...
