Illinois Proposing Assault Weapon Ban!

Deanimator, Illinois is not going backward on gun rights. This proposed legislation has been shot down before and it will be again, by those of us here in Illinois that remain committed and politically active. We aren't there yet but we have made strides in the right direction and will continue.
Exactly what "strides" have you made that didn't come out of SCOTUS?

There is no handgun ban in Chicago SOLELY due to the decisions of people OUTSIDE of Illinois.

Illinois missed CC by 6 votes in the House. A CC bill could easilyb pass on a simple majority vote but would get vetoed, and wouldn't overturn Illinois' "home rule" const. provision which requires a super majority.

Losing by 6 votes (3 changed at the last minute) on a super majority basis is not too bad for Illinois. We're not done yet. The political landscape will also change after Nov.

Any proposed bans/restrictions are political posturing, they can't get enough votes to pass

7 (B) a semi-automatic rifle that has an ability to
8 accept a detachable magazine and has any of the
9 following:
10 (i) a folding or telescoping stock;
11 (ii) a pistol grip or thumbhole stock;
12 (iii) a shroud that is attached to, or
13 partially or completely encircles the barrel, and
14 that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with
15 the non-trigger hand without being burned; or
16 (iv) a fixed magazine that has the capacity to
17 accept more than 10 rounds of ammunition;

OK. So it is not legal to own a semi-automatic rifle that accepts a detachable magazine AND has a fixed magazine holding 10 rounds or more?????

My wife and I are moving to the chicago area in the next year or so. I will not consider buying a house in Cook county even though it means that we will be much further from all of our friends and probably work.

Didn't a bunch of southern Illinois counties send a letter to the state legislature stating they would ignore such laws?

IF THESE BILLS PASS, YOU WILL HAVE 90 DAYS TO SURRENDER YOUR GUNS TO THE POLICE OR THE POLICE WILL BE COMING TO YOUR DOOR TO TAKE YOUR GUNS TO THE FURNACE, AND YOU TO THE PENITENTIARY.

I guess they'll be testing the phrase "Molon Labe" if those laws pass. I doubt many citizens of Illinois will decline to line up at the turn in stations.

IL citizens remind me of the citizens of the Warsaw ghetto. They line up for just about everything.

Illinois is NOT anti gun.

Some politicians from the metro Chicago area are anti gun, and they have disproportionate influence in Springfield.

However, just because some goof proposes something doesn't mean it's time to panic. It's time to be vigilant and track the progress of such legislation through the process.

If you follow the fate of any of this goofy anti-gun legislation at the federal level, and I sometimes do, you will find that lots of stuff gets proposed and that's as far as it goes. It never gets to committee and it never gets voted on. It's allowed to die.

I suspect that the State of Illinois has a legislative website where you can track the progress of proposed legislation. Track this and see where it goes.

I think this particular Bill has made it out of committee and has had 2 readings/debates. It's heading into its 3rd reading before it heads to the floor for a vote. I could be wrong though.

The bill doesn't stand a chance of making it out of the Legislature, its pure political posturing.
I'm willing to put money behind my statement, any takers?

Illinois should either secede from the "Union" or follow the U.S. Constitution.

“What constitutes the bulwark of our own liberty and independence? It is not our frowning battlements, our bristling sea coasts, our army and our navy. These are not our reliance against tyranny. All of those maybe turned against us without making us weaker for the struggle. Our reliance is in the love of liberty which God has planted in us. Our defence is in the spirit which prized liberty as the heritage of all men, in all lands everywhere.”

Illinois citizens are not anti-gun once you leave Chicago. In fact Illinois has quite a vibrant hunting community. After all we all know the biggest trophy white tailed deer come out of the Land of Lincoln ;)

Seriously this crap legislation comes up every year, its the state reps who represent all the ghetto districts have to say they gave it a shot (pun intended) .

Illinois is definately two states, Chicago metro (where 80% of the population lives), and everything else which isnt much different from Iowa or Indiana

I'd like to point a few things out to some of those viewing this whole situation OUTSIDE Illinois. First, Chicago is the ONLY place in this state, where the ONLY major resistance against conceal carry legislation is. Second, Illinois is NOT an anti-gun state, not in the NY or CA sense. Sure you may hear about Chicago's yearly AWB legislation, but if you know this state's politics, you'll find soon enough it's just Chicago showing the rest of the state who is boss. As a suburbanite I can say the Chicago suburbs West and Northwest, are by far, DADT-style pro-gun (the culture here is different, you generally don't talk about going to the range in front of the typical liberals that pollute suburbia with their utopian gun-free BS because they always want to TRY and brainwash you with their BS arguments). As long as you steer clear of most lefty enclaves like Skokie, Wilhmette, Winnetka, Highland Park and Evanston plus Chicago itself, it's very much a pro-gun state. Plus, even in Chicago, you can own magazines that hold 13 rds. max, that's better than CA or NY, by any stretch in my book. Plus the process of getting a handgun to own in Chicago one circle in hell BETTER compared to D.C's process (though it could be better!)

Wow! They really got you drinking the Kool-Aid! I gotta tell you, while it's not NY, NJ, DC, or CA it is still pretty Draconian. Definitely in the top 10 of horrible States for gun owners.

For what its worth, my state representative here in Illinois, who happens to be a Democrat, responded to an email I sent to her regarding these proposed bills. She stated with absolute clarity that she will oppose these bills. Not to get political, I'm not one to ever praise a Democrat (especially living in the shadow of Chicago) but in this case I have to give her kudos. I would encourage all Illinois residents to contact their representative and politely request that they oppose these proposed bills and vote NO.

As for Illinois sucking? Chicago and Cook county "suck". The rest of us unfortunately get covered with the "excrement" that comes from the north east corner of the state.

Couple of things...one, this is absoultey rediculous. I dont know how many times I have to explain to people, even if you dont like guns, stricter gun laws do NOTHING to reduce crime. Second a point that many dont see is gun control isnt even about guns, its about control. The more power the government has, and believe me, the more rights they take away, the more they are making us a more of a socialized dictatorship, simialr to what many European countries are like. Banning guns almost soley on cosmetics further prooves the ignorance of law makers. What are they really trying to accomplish? Slowly diminishing our constitutional rights sets a pretty scary precident for our future. The 2nd amendment is the one right that really gaurantees our others. We the people are suppost to defend those rights, which is the whole point of the right to bare arms. Enough of the governments arbitrary and unrestricted lawmaking. Focus on defending the rights and protecting them, not taking them away by a piece of legislation like this crap.

If the people fear it's government, then theres tyranny. If the government fears its people, then theres liberty.

These anti gun bills surface every political season and are thumped in the head to go to sleep until the next session. The anti gun faction is slowly losing ground and losing influence as the pro 2a pro concealed carry make slow but consistent progress. It's just a matter of time if we keep doing our part. Enthusiastic Pro concealed carry meetings are being held in parts of cook county where only a couple years ago they wouldn't have been able to fill a minivan. There is increasingly pro movement in some of the black neighborhoods and the politicians are taking notice.

I suspect there may be a desperate attempt to push this thing. Hopefully a last gasp. I would keep my eyes and ears open if I were in Illinois.

Don't forget that Rahm Emanuel (now mayor of Chicago) was one of the architects of the federal Assault Weapon Ban 1994-2004, and worked along with Dennis Burke 1989-1994 on the AWB, Burke is the US Attorney in Phoenix who "retired" over the Operation Fast & Furious "gunwalking" scandal (used to promote calls to re-instate the federal AWB).

Is there any grandfathering in this?
Yes but all grandfathered firearms would have to be registered with the state police. I can see the price of AR's going up if it really looks like this might pass.
