I've only recently gotten into black powder shooting, and still only have one firearm that takes the stuff. But I've notice four out of the past five range trips this year have been black only. I also noticed I now have a powder horn and sundry possibles. Also that I use words like "foofarah" and "skookum." I was going to take some cartridge rifles to the range this past Sunday but again took the smoke pole. Now I've got a Tryon rifle on order. Is this condition permanent?

> Is this condition permanent?

What I've noticed is that the typical smokeless shooter shows up at the range and blows away $75 worth of cartridges rather quickly, then leaves. On the other hand, the blackpowder crowd stay all afternoon casually loading and shooting, BSing, and generally having a very good time. If you want to have a lot of fun, make it permanent.

Guilty and proud of it. I now load black powder for just about everything. What started off with one .50 cal muzzle loader. turned into 1 .50 cal muzzle loader and 4 cap and ball handguns. Then now i have a conversion cylinder for one of my guns that allow me to shoot cartridges instead of straight powder wad and ball. What do i do. i start pure lead casting then, black powder cartridge load. Around january i picked up a recipe for loading 12 guage with Goex. So guess what im doing now. It is different you appreciate shooting one at a time. I find myself trying to be more accurate. Its great shooting black powder. I really love it.

I have discovered that this is the only addiction that my wife doesn't get too bent out of shape over. I have already quit smoking and drinking, so there isn't much else I can do that I enjoy. I have 2 .50 cal rifles, a flint Kentucky and a Hawkens perc(my son's really) and a .44 single shot percussion pistol and two more I'm trying to get on Gunbroker.

15 revolvers.
5 pistols.
9 rifles.
9 shotguns.
knives, possible bags, nipple wrenches, flasks, measures, loading stands, loading blocks, chargers, range rods, powder, patches, wads, cards, solvents, cleaners, lubricants, gun rugs, slings, jags, ball pullers, patch pullers, punches, bore lights, starters, round balls, minie balls, conicals, sabots, holsters, cases, caps, flints, targets, stones, hammers, screwdrivers. I think that's about it.

I LOVE THE SMELL OF SULFUR IN THE MORNING!

OMG Mykeal if they a black powder annonymous i think you need to be a member. hahahahah. thats a lot of black powder.

What...No Bullet/Ball molds????

Relatively cheap to shoot, but it's like packing for vacation every time you go to the range. I'm not complaining though.

I took my father in law out shooting this weekend. When I touched off the muzzleloader he said "that smells......interesting".

I love the looks and comments I get from people at the range. About 25% are annoyed by all the smoke. About 70% are interested but wouldn't want to do it themselves. The other 5% think it's pretty cool :)

5 percussion revolvers (replicas)
SXS 10 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge,
'87 Win. lever action (replica) 12 gauge
Rossi '92 .44-40
Uberti SAA .44-40
T/C Hawkin
The cartridge guns have seen very little smokeless powder.

Yup, it can be habit formin'.

Thought about experimenting with BP for my .243's, but I'm not sure how long the gas system would last on the Browning.

Same here, but at the same time those same folks have no qualms about sitting or standing while shooting their "tanker" garand, or mosin carbine, or ported .300 winmag up under the tin roof on my home range, instead of holding the muzzle beyond the edge of the roof, so we all get to experience their concussion!

I apologize for that rather selfish post above. It's a bit embarrassing, frankly - I'm not generally that much of a show off. That just goes to show you what breathing sulfur will do to you over the years.

Some of that stuff is not shootable yet - antiques that I picked up while living overseas for a while, so it's not really as bad as it looks. But someday....

No, no reloading or casting equipment. Yet. I'm working on Dutch Schoultz's muzzleloading accuracy program and it's pretty apparent that I'm going to have to start casting my own soon, as the commercial stuff isn't going to be sufficient.

Yup, it's a permanent condition.

A few years back, I picked up a rather sad looking TC Newenglander for about $50. Mainly just to say I had a front stuffer. After cleaning it up and going to the range, it now will print a one-hole group at 25 yards with a linen PRB. Now, I'll take it to the range with a few of my cartridge guns, and they stay in the cases. Shooting black powder is just too much fun. Now I'm looking for a 32 cal. to go with my 50.

If you want to have a lot of "fun" at the range, go on a day when there isn't a lot of wind. Then set up shop next to the guy that just picked up a case of ammo, and looks bent on shooting all of it that day. Then proceed to fog for mosquitos:D.

I know what ya mean, to me it's a load more fun to go out to the range with some of my BP guns & shoot most of the afternoon than to take some of my modern pieces & shoot.

It's not just the time element. I've noticed I spend a lot less money and get more bang for the buck. Roundballs are still very cheap, running about $8 per 100. Goex runs about $22 a pound locally. But for that $30 I get many more hours of shooting than I ever would from two boxes of rifle ammo. Or at today's prices a box and a half.

I have obviously led a sheltered and innocent life. Can someone please tell me what "foofarah" and "skookum" mean? I hate to think that I have been missing out on important stuff like this!

Fooferah is lace, fancy beads, soap and such. Things a man has no need for. Something skookum is a solid and well made thing.

Their is no cure just accept it. I have synthetic stock CVA 50cal Bobcat i bought for 50 dollars i guess it is all most a muzzle loader and brass frame 51 44 cal Colt and 58 Remington 44cal revolvers. No matter what center fire rifles i take to the range my 50cal always comes along for the ride. I have been referred to as the guy shooting the SKS with a 51 Colt on his hip.

Have fun, stay safe

If ya have the time you should put a wood stock on that Bobcat like I did mine, it sure makes it look nicer "IMO" & the recoil is significantly less with the slight added weight.

Voodoochile, I like my Bobcat but i don't like the stock do you know were i can find a wood stock for it. Can post a pic of your Bobcat.

I've gotten my Stock from Traditions for just a tad over $40.00 "their Kit stock for the Deer Hunter rifle is near identicle to the Bobcat."

Here is my thread I started showing what I've done to it, I'm near finished with mine, I have the patch box to inlay & it'll be done.
