In a Los Angeles coffin.
Just accepted a job offer, we got the movers coming to pack up our stuff after Xmas and we're doing the 1+K drive at the end of the month.

What do I need to do, gunwise, when I get there? Kiss the dirt.:D

Any good gun clubs, specifically in the city of Tyler.

Most of my CA neighbors are envious since they couldn't get certain guns here. I've sold all my ten round magazines and AR15 bullet button (to comply with CA silly evil black rifle laws).

Any fellow Texans?

I am in Austin, so I don't know of any where in Tyler to shoot. Lots of open land out in East Texas though, you should be able to find somewhere to shoot... Welcome to Texas ;)

'Bout time

First thing you need to do is accept the Texas Rangers as your favorite team, even though they've had a few(dozen) bad seasons.

I'm not too familiar with the Tyler area as far as gun clubs and whatnot though, but they have the rose gardens, but the rose are probably dead right now, and they've got a lottery claim center.

The second thing you need to do is go and buy .50 cal barrett

*ENVIOUS*. Not particularly about East Texas, but Texas in general. Fortuantely, Arizona is just as if not more liberal in a good way when it comes to gun laws. Congrats on leaving the Socialist Republic of California. I loved it when I lived there, but all my guns were in AZ.

Well, I'd probably start off getting rid of my UT CCW and get a TX CHL.

Then talk the local gun shops in obtaining a permit for suppressors. The small town CLEO signs off on everything.

Yup, the Rose Garden is pretty nice. Thanks for the welcome, I hope to me some TX THR members there.

Loved Texas, hated the east Texas humidity (around Houston.) You know it's bad when a native Alabamian complains about humidity!

You will enjoy it

There are many places to shoot outdoors and several indoor ranges within a short drive.

Gun laws are favorable to the citizen.

BTW: The hunting is good there as well.

Yes, get a Texas CHL but why drop the Utah CCW? Can you not just change the address for the Utah? You may have both, ya know. Or is there something about that which I don’t know?

I made the move from Socal to San Antonio for work 4 months ago. The drive SUCKED and was very ugly... not to mention HOT.. but ive enjoyed my freedom's!

2nd day here i bought some "Standard Capacity Mags" and sold all my 10rounders :) ... 3 days later i bought my XDm... Ive spent THOUSANDS since hahahaha

I for one wouldn't be able do that, at least since they (the Senators) bailed on me when I was 10. I never got back into baseball after that.:fire:

BTW, the dozens of bad seasons started before they moved southwest.:p

I didn't know the Rangers had any fans . . . :neener: (with the possible exception, of course, for the time they stole Nolan Ryan from us)

Welcome to Texas. I think ya'll will like the "Piney Woods". I make it over there in the spring to buy "Noonday Onions". IMO the best onion ever. Be sure to check out Canton Trade Days. Lot of bargins there. Texas is very gun friendly so good luck and have fun.

You will love it here, you can actually go to a gun store....and walk out that SAME day with your gun purchase!! I could never live in that California...NEVER.

You know what they say about Texas...

A wonderful state, ruined by Texans :neener:

Actually everybody I've interacted with in Texas was very nice (except Houston.... ick)

A friend of mine is pending a job offer in Texas, and I am thinking about following him there myself! Congrats on the job. You are making a good move!

Tyler is a nice Town.

Welcome to Texas. I think you'll like it here. Most people are very friendly and polite.

Unless there's someplace I don't know about though, you won't find any shooting ranges on state lands. And target shooting or plinking is prohibited on most public land. Texas is a great place to live, but for a state of its size, it has a remarkably small amount of public lands available to hunters, and none that I'm aware of for shooters.

Most folks here hunt and shoot on their own private property. The easiest way to provide yourself a place to shoot is to buy your own.

Of course, there are shooting ranges where you can pay to shoot. There's an indoor range in Tyler called "Lock n' Load". And I believe there are several other facilities too.

ezypikns- Ain't that the truth!...

California actually has Texas beat in terms of just going to find a place to shoot against a hill or something. I could drive 1hr north and hit BLM land and just start shooting. Here in San Antonio, not so much.

There are several ranges here local to me but their EXPENSIVE... 1 is indoor, have to use their ammo, their targets, ect.... another is Bass Pro shop but it has a 30min MAX even with yearly membership... 30min sucks!...

Any others are an hour away from me, some charge per gun you bring in ect...

The gun laws are better here for owning them and self defense but i'll give credit where credit is due... It was easier and more enjoyable (For me) to shoot in California.

People always talk abou Texas like its the best for gun owners... but after living here now... If i could pick/choose.... Id be in Utah/Arizona for my gun rights :)

There's the mentioned Lock and Load indoor range in Tyler. Been there once, nice place. Bring money.
The East Texas Rifle and Pistol Club is just down the road a piece from Tyler right off I-20 between Longview and Kilgore. NRA membership required. It's outdoor with covered shooting spots. Very reasonable, can't remember exactly how much. I do most of my plinking type shooting on the Sabine River. There's a first class sporting clay range west of Kilgore, Prairie Creek Ranch about a half hour from Tyler. There used to be a range just outside the loop in Tyler but I've never been there. You'll get used to the fact that a 30-60 minute drive ain't nothing in Texas.
Welcome to Texas, we don't care how you used to do it in California.

Part of the problem with Texas......

is that when Texas joined the Union in 1845, they kept title to all their public lands, unlike other western states where the public land was turned over to the U.S. government. So no BLM land in Texas.

Texas either gave away (for compensation for military service in various wars) or sold almost all of its public lands.

There are WMA's (Wildlife Management Areas) controlled by the state which are available to hunters (deer, turkey, small game), but even they require an additional license fee, and they can be pretty crowded in the fall. Firearms are restricted from some of them (Bowhunting only), and NO target shooting is allowed on any of them.

There are two Federal Grasslands areas in North Central Texas (Caddo National Grasslands) which are available for hunting with no special permit required, but once again, they get crowded. And NO target shooting allowed there either.

There's also some public land around the man made reservoirs around the state. This is land controlled by The Army Corps of Engineers. Permits are required there too (most are free) and NO target shooting allowed.

Hunting in Texas is becoming a rich man's sport. Most hunting leases will cost you around 1000.00 to 2000.00 a year per hunter. I grew up here and still love Texas, but the days of asking permission to hunt a farmer's or rancher's property for free are pretty much done.

And pay-to-shoot ranges are just about the only answer for target shooters and plinkers. Most of them are fairly restrictive. Most won't allow rapid fire, some won't allow FMJ rifle ammo, and some won't allow you to shoot your own reloads.

Dang.......I'm depressed.

First off, you need to get rid of the shaking steering wheel syndrome. I've driven to upper Maine and back to Kansas twice. Maybe a couple shoots of Jack would help. Hell, your liv'in in Texas now.

To get back to target acquisition, start off by getting one of those baseball bats that has the fly swatter weave in it. Your can re-sharpen your eye-hand coordination by swatting those flying cockroaches they have:uhoh: there. God, I can feel them crawling down my shirt as I type..........
