Hunting in Texas is becoming a rich man's sport. Most hunting leases will cost you around 1000.00 to 2000.00 a year per hunter. I grew up here and still love Texas, but the days of asking permission to hunt a farmer's or rancher's property for free are pretty much done.
Rich man's sport? Well it isn't in Central Texas yet.
However, if you get caught killing a deer on another persons property without permission it's a Felony and that can get real expensive. Not to mention never being able to own a firearm again for life.
If you plan to hunt deer on someones property get it in writing.

yep, welcome to America.

2 things:
1st and most important, if you catch yourself talking about how you did things in Cali, stuff a Twix in your mouth. Local East Texas culture is very cool, and Tyler is a nice place. Soak it up and forget Cali.

2nd and almost as important: buy yourself a nice barbecue gun and holster.
If you don't know what a barbecue gun is, do a search here and you'll find some nice examples.

And, don't go buy a cowboy hat. :neener:

In Tyler you will learn the true meaning of the phrase, "I can't see the forest for the trees." You will learn to fear and love logging trucks --- fear them, because they are monsters barreling toward you on narrow, windy roads; love 'em because they are taking some of the dad-blamed pine trees out so you can see sky. Timber rattlers are mean sum-beetches. If you get off the beaten trail, quicksand ain't a joke. Do not just go wandering off in the National Forest. Ever see Deliverance? Yeah, there are places out there where Game Wardens will not - repeat will NOT - go. Period.

Tyler is the den of civilization in East Texas. Nice town; college town (Univ. Texas - Tyler) with college town ammenities. But, you're just a half-hour from Mayberry in any given direction.

I spent three years in Crockett, about 90 miles south of Tyler.

I think you need a Passport and work visa to make that move don't you....?

Why? Persons moving north into Texas don't need those, why would a person moving south into Texas need them? :D

I suggest making the Dallas Market Hall Gun Show, some of the participants are very talented and knowledgeable and from all parts of North Texas and beyond, in a short period of time you could cover a lot of ground. The members of The Dallas Arms Collectors Association Inc, have a sight that list activities +.

Don't let the little town atmosphere fool you. Tyler has some serious gang and drug problems. Especially on the north and west sides of town. It is nothing like LA, but it ain't Mayberry either.

Wait up a minute. First thing you know we’ll be covered up with refugees.

Texas is hot and humid in the southeast.
Parched and dry in the southwest.
Cold and wet in the northwest.
Too close to Oklahoma in the northeast.
Too full of city-escapers in the middle hill country.
Too many lakes for boating and fishing taking up valuable scrub land.
Wild drivers doing 70 on 2-lane roads.
Reckless 80mph speed limit in the western part.
Slow drivers on the shoulder of 2-lane roads merely to let someone pass.
I have to listen to my neighbors shooting guns and the only way I can get back at them is to set on my front porch with my g-kids and shoot targets in my woods.

Think of what you’re giving up by leaving California.
Strangers on the street letting you know they support 2A by displaying their guns and knives to you.
Sierra Club members protecting your environment by keeping you from disturbing the sand in Death Valley.
Los Angeles keeping the state from being flooded by taking all the water from north California.
San Francisco keeping government offices busy by providing welfare to ex-millionaires in Silicon Valley.
The Terminator keeping you from hurting yourself cleaning guns by keeping you from owning all those ugly assault weapons.

Stay in California or New York City or Detroit where the police are good shots and protect you because they have to shoot guns at 3AM all the time.

Please spread the word: Texas is an awful place to live. I know, I live here.

Posts: 311 There's the mentioned Lock and Load indoor range in Tyler. Been there once, nice place. Bring money.
The East Texas Rifle and Pistol Club is just down the road a piece from Tyler right off I-20 between Longview and Kilgore. NRA membership required. It's outdoor with covered shooting spots. Very reasonable, can't remember exactly how much. I do most of my plinking type shooting on the Sabine River. There's a first class sporting clay range west of Kilgore, Prairie Creek Ranch about a half hour from Tyler. There used to be a range just outside the loop in Tyler but I've never been there. You'll get used to the fact that a 30-60 minute drive ain't nothing in Texas.
Welcome to Texas, we don't care how you used to do it in California.

All good info, I live in Jacksonville, about 25 miles due south of Tyler. I have a membership in the Highway 31 shootiing range, yes on hwy 31, south of Tyler, just outside Chandler. It's about a 45 min drive for me, but the only range for rifles around. They have 25,50,100, 200, and I have been told if it is not too wet, a 500 yard range( have not seen that part). Also a dedicated 25 yard pistol range. Across the creek is an area for practical pistol type shooting and if this is not in use there is a permanently mounted trap for very informal clay birds.

Lock & Load is ok but I do not care for indoor. It's owned by a cardiologist, who is also an excellent photographer. He took the pictures that made international news when the space shuttle Columbia broke up over E. Texas. A large piece landed less than 1/4mile from my house, and was guarded by state troopers for seveal days until it was picked up.

Purchasing firearms is no problem here, especially if you have a Texas CHL. With it you just fill out the 4473, pay, and take it with you, No background check.

Most police officers I know are fine with concelaed carry, just let them know. Had one chastise me lightly because I left it in the car while shopping for a safe where he was learning to be a locksmith on the side. Said it did'nt do any good in the car if i needed it elsewhere. Before we had CHL, I was called in to our ER, the hospital where I am a pharmacist. One of the officers was working security and we got to talking, and I told hime coming up there I carried, again no problems, just told him my attitude was that if stopped I would simply be courteous so as not to give any reason for a search and he replied that was the thing to do.

You are moving to a good area. Tyler is ok for shopping, Mac's gunshop downtown has been there for years, he is a serious collector of Parker shotguns. There are a couple of good new shops, a couple down on hwy 155 south and on on the NE loop called Hot Rod Arms, which deals mostly in police/tactical type( I picked up some stripped lower receivers for some AR builds there) and a Gander Mountain which has a good selection.

If you do not want to go to Dallas, Shreveport, La is closer and easier to get around in, at least I know the town better having spent a few years in the USAF Res over at Barksdale AFB. Just east of town at Haughton, off US Hwy 80 is Jim Clark's( now deceased) place, being run by his sons and daugher. Good for 1911 work and they have branched out int custon 10/22 and AR 15 types. Last time I was there the showroom was like a museum. A bit west in Terrel is a little shop, called Chadicks, Hershel Chadick deals in high grade and vintage shotguns, Parkers, LC Smith, Fox, British, and European. I have handled a couple of Parkers there that were priced at about $130,000, way out of my price range but the nice folks let me handle everything there as much as I wanted so I could determine what I might want.

One of the first things you need to learn about Texas is the geography. It is not NE Texas unless you are talking about Texarkanna. It is East Texas; Central Texas; South Texas, North Texas, West Texas; and last but not least "The Hill Country".

Spent a lot of time in and around Tyler years ago. Pay attention to the surface geology as the sand can eat your vehicle's lunch if you are not careful.

Worst thing about East Texas.... not enough deer and no rocks. Best thing... It's Texas! You need a cowboy hat and certainly a pickup. Enjoy.

Don't forget... it's legal to pass on the right in our great state.

It's also legal for anyone, regardless of wether you have a carry license or not, to carry concealed in your vehicle a loaded handgun.

The two go together great.

Oh...almost forgot. Quick vocabulary lesson.

Y'all is the singular pronoun. As in, "Glad y'all are comin' to Texas."
Y'all's is the singular possessive. As in, "Glad y'all's guns arrived."
All y'all is the plural pronoun. As in, "All y'all wanna barbeque plate for lunch?"
All y'all's is the plural possessive. As in, "All y'all's plates are gonna be $89.93. Cash only, please."

"Damnyankee" is one word in Texas. So is "sumbeetch."

Every Arkansaw joke you've ever heard also applies to East Texas.

Example: How's an East Texas repo man like an Arkansaw twister? Either way, someone's gonna loose a trailer.

Nacogdoches is pronounced just how it looks: Nak-a-dough-shes. Ain't that hard, pardner. Run across a man named Thibodeaux, you best not say "Thigh-bow-dox" 'lessen you want a hacked off Cajun teaching you to pronouce it "Tib-a-dough."

Finally, if you don't yet know what "hook 'em" or "gig 'em" means, you've got a few days to study on it. Use the wrong one at the wrong time, and you'll find yourself back in CA, postage due.

Texas is a a great State you will love it.
You'll enjoy the Tyler area, I highly reccomend you take up Bass fishing as you're in the heart of it in the Tyler area. Lake Fork is great and holds football sized bass.
Hog hunting, Bass fishing, Deer hunting and Pick-up in every drive way. You can't beat it.
I came to Texas as my last duty station in a 20 + year Army Career 15 years ago. I wont leave.

Another one.

Every Arkansaw joke you've ever heard also applies to East Texas.

What's an East Texas Bankroll? A 5$ bill wrapped around the outside of a roll of ones.

What's an Arkansas bankroll? A dollar bill wrapped around a cucumber.

Texas prohibits the open carry of handguns and you will find a lot of businesses that prohibit concealed carry on their premises also. Don't forget that in a great deal of the state that when you basically step off the side walk or road right-of-way you are trespassing. Very little public land at all. Texas is better than a lot of states but I have to agree with NMGonzo. I could move back to Texas easily as I own property there but it ain't gonna happen.

Of course fishing is another thing. Texas has lots of lakes. Fishing kind of sucks here in NM.
