Well, rest assured, if you have remained concerned about this. I got my elk, a respectable large-end 5x5 but no Forest Monster, at 173 yards with 180 grs Sierra SPBT over 56.2 grs H4350. Quartering, just off broadside. Through and through, total destruction of both lungs. Clearly delivered both excellent penetration and expansion. He took four wobbly steps, dropped, and was gone by the time I had walked to him.
You brought back a 6 month old thread just to take another swipe at me?

All I asked you was, if you are loading a premium 165gr bullet in the form of an AccuBond why when you moved up in weight to a 180gr bullet did you step down to a GameKing bullet? If the AccuBond is good enough in 165gr why not in 180gr too. Or, if the GameKing is good in 180gr why not in 165gr too?

You signaled concern that the 180 gr Sierra SPBT would not be up to the job. I write only to assuage your concerns so that you can again sleep at night. I didn't want you to suffer on in ignorance given that you "have a problem with [my] bullet selection". I am shocked, and a little hurt, to learn that your problem with my bullet selection hasn't haunted you ever since then but pleased that I did the right thing anyway by letting you know that it all turned out just fine.

The 180gr SGK is supposed to be quite a bit tougher than the 150gr and 165gr, pretty much perfect for use on elk sized game. I use the 165gr SGK's for deer, but I was afraid that they would be a bit soft for elk at hot '06 velocities, so I worked up an elk load with the tougher 180gr version. Probably not really necessary, but hopefully I'll get a chance to test out performance once the snow pushes them down a bit.

I'll bet if we took a vote, most of us over age 65, would pick 4064 and those under 65 would mostly pick 4350

You are showing very low character continuing to be a wise guy just because I had a different opinion on which bullet would be best to use. This is especially strange because you used the same bullet I thought best when you loaded the lighter bullet. What in the world was wrong with suggesting you stick with the AccuBond bullet when you stepped up in bullet weight?

From what you say in your posts you seem to be a nasty person who doesn't understand the concept of a discussion. You asked opinions and when I gave mine you turned nasty. This will be my last post in this thread, you have a nice day.

AA, so sad to learn this all still so disturbing for you. I am neither nasty nor a bad hombre, for that matter. You were so concerned, I wrote to reassure you that you need not be. Your reaction is rather odd. Oh well, as the saying goes, 'there's naught queer as folk'.

Gtscotty - the current weather isn't really helpful :) Lot's of verticality required at the moment. Hopefully, things cool down this weekend. I think the 180 SGK will serve your needs. As you say, much tougher bullet than the same in 165, designed to hold together well and did so as designed in my case. Good luck.

Just some of the multitude of research and reviews out there documenting SGK 180 gr strong performance and suitability for elk:

"The 180 grain GameKing is very stout but performs well on game weighing between 90 and 180kg (200-400lb) out to ranges of around 325 yards. The 180 grain GK is also adequate for Elk at ranges of between 200 and 400 yards which allows the GK to expand but not fragment and at these velocity parameters, jacket core separation is minimized."

Been living off of IMR 4064 in my 30-06 since 1968. Use it for 150 and 165 grn sp and bt. I have RL17 but just have not gotten around to trying it yet.

I use more IMR-4064 than any other powder (and possibly more than all other powders combined). I've found great loads for 257 Roberts (75 gr TNT), 7x57 (multiple bullets), 8x57 (200 gr NP & Custom Comp), 30-06 (lots o' bullets betwixt 125 & 168 gr), and 7.62x54R (174 gr HPBT). It doesn't meter great, but I put a homemade baffle in my Lee PPM and it meters much, much better than before. I've tried Varget, since it's sort-of a less temperature sensitive version of IMR-4064 but haven't been able to get the same accuracy out of it in any of the loads I've tried. I haven't tried them all, but it does work well in 223 w/ 60 gr Hdy SP.

I use 4064 at 50-52 gr for 150 gr hunting bullets in my sporterized 1903A3 Remington with the original 2-groove barrel. After trying many powders, I've found it gets me consistent 1/2 to 3/4 MOA. Most of my .30-'06 loads these days are for my M1, so I stick to 4064/4895/2520/748/760 and avoid the slower powders.
