Incident in my own driveway

Targa", very quiet 85 lb. Boxer/Pitbull

Just had to toss in a "woohoo!" for a great breed mix, my buds are rott/pitt, and boxer/pitt, and both of em are all around fantastic.

While CCW when mowing might seem silly to some, there have been more than a few cases that homes have been robbed while the owner was mowing. The doors where unlocked because the owner was home, the BG's new they were busy & likely would'nt notice them. Like a previous poster noted, most of us will never need it, but you'll never know in advance that you do.
Here in Cleveland a few months ago, a couple of nitwits (at least one of them on probation for armed robbery) tried to rob a guy right on his front lawn. He plugged one of them. The other ran away. Much to the surprise of the dead nitwit's family and "friends", sympathy for him here was more rare than a coherent thought from Brittany Spears. The surviving nitwit was apprehended and may face the death penalty for the demise of his partner, under the felony murder rule.

This brings back memories of a very dark few weeks in my youth:

Back in the 80's when my late father was a Topeka PD detective he busted a serial rapist posing as a door-to-door spray cleaner salesman.

Dad had already interviewed this guy as a person of interest in one of the cases, then about a week later he'd tracked down where we lived and showed up on our front door, ringing the bell with a bottle of cleaner and rags!

Apparently he thought that since Dad's car wasn't there he was at work. What he didn't know was Dad was home taking a couple compensatory days off and his car was in the shop. A 6 block footchase ensued while Mom called 911. I heard that it took several cops to pull Dad off the guy when they arrived.

This guy was later convicted of 20 rapes and sentenced to 80 years consecutive for all counts. Dad had another 15 cases ready to turn over to the DA but they declined to prosecute as he was in jail effectively for life.

It gets worse: A few months after this clown is sentenced another "salesman" shows up in the neighborhood. This guy was a cellmate with the rapist for several months and was released on parole. While he was out he was going to do a "favor" for his cellmate. We weren't home but a neighbor called the cops on him. He ran, was caught and put back in prison.

I'm armed, or within seconds of a loaded firearm 24/7 at home. Makes the wife nervous when her nieces are around but we make it work. She's heard all the family cop war stories and she understands.

A no soliciting sign might help,
Not really
A long time ago I got tired of working for a living so I took a job as a vacuum cleaner salesman
There was a month long class which taught us all the tricks to getting a sale
The first one we were taught was that a No Soliciting sign meant that the home owner was probably an easy mark
Theory was that they had to put the sign up because they lacked the will power to turn you away personally

Interesting. An "All solicitors will be shot" might be more appropriate, then - a hybrid between two common themes. :p (That's a joke.)

In all seriousness: anyone who comes to my door, or approaches me at my home is treated with the utmost of seriousness. I do not know you from Joe (whoever that is) and if you're clean and dressed nicely it's going to make no difference - criminals can do that too. What better an opportunity to case a house than to be invited in to advertise your wares? "C'mon in, it's hot out and I don't want to run the AC" - or they (you or I) step out to talk and they or their accomplice jumps.

I had a couple of friends from a non-CCW state vacationing here recently and they were "shocked" that I carried a gun everywhere, even at home. We had several discussions about CCW choices and laws and the risk factor of being unarmed when so many predators roam the streets. Some people will never "get it".

Cultural Bias

Some people will never "get it".
Yup.

A while back I had a spirited discussion with a lad who fervently believed that cars should go away. He's an urban dude.

Nobody needs a car.

His assertion was that there should be trains and busses and subways for everything. He simply couldn't get his head around everyone having (or needing) individual transportation.

His upbringing and personal experience had conditioned him to the public transportation model.

I was unable to sway him.

His argument was that "civlization" was (or should be) rather too far advanced for people to still need cars.

*Sigh*

I wonder what it would have been like to argue guns with him.

I kinda chuckled at this. Many of you should know way better, from a tactical standpoint, that when company knocks, but you ain't expecting company, expect trouble!!! 9/10 people that I know call in advance before they just show up. Decent people call and let you know they are comming, or tell you in some way instead of just "show up". No, when its whatever late hour in the evening and someone is knocking on MY door, but I never called any friends over, the FIRST thing you should know to do is ARM YOURSELF. This is directly to you, Mr. "No Entryway Weapon". Rather than spend the money on another weapon, keep one or two in a central location on your way TO the door, that way when you respond to tap tap tap, you're also picking up Mr. Boom Boom Boom on the way.

More cultural bias
My friends know they can just show up

I keep a small pistol either a .32 Tomcat or a .22 revolver loaded with Mini-mags nearby if not on me when I'm outside around my place which is off the road aways. 2 confrontations with dog packs, 1 with suspected robbers while I was abed w/flu (resolved it with 4-5 shots over the car roof with my .22 rifle) and being ripped off many years back has taught me my lesson.

I have no signs on my home or vehicles. No "Insured by Smith & Wesson," no NRA decal, no cutesy "Anyone entering at night will be found here in the morning" type drivel. Why warn potential goblins what to expect? One night many moons ago friends were visiting and we were up playing cards at 0230 (lived in Long Beach in the DPRK at the time) when there was a knock at the door. I answered with my 1911 out of the knocker's sight. He claimed to be a recently moved in neighbor and needed some money for gas to get his car off the freeway where he ran out. I knew no one had just moved in to the neighbothood, so I told him to wait a minute and shut the door. Then I handed my wife and my friend each a .38 and said "Watch my back" to him. Normally I wouldn't go out, but I was concerned that there might be more people outside, but not enough reason to call the police. When I opened the door Mr. Breakdown was gone. Next day an article in the local paper said the police were seeking a lowlife who had been going around our area looking for easy marks.

One of the greatest myths of self-defense is that the same bad people that disregard the law will have regard for the imaginary borders we create in our minds.

They don't.

Not my words.
But love the expression " a gun is meant to be COMFORTING,not comfortable".
You might be the toughest man in the world [ might ].
But if caught off guard and they breach your entry, they get to your loved ones.
That is NOT an option.

Hey you guys ^^^^^^

Do you realize that this is a 9 year old thread, that Mainsail bumped, and the OP has not posted on this board for 6 years?????

.

I don't go outside, get the mail, etc. without a gun. I couldn't care less who thinks that's "paranoid."
Most of the time, a gun won't be needed, but it's that one time that could be life changing in a bad way.

Last year, I was getting my mail. My mailbox is about 30 yards from my door. I noticed an SUV parked across the street. Just as I got to the mailbox, a guy around 25 & 6'7" approaches me & says, "Hey, I ran out of gas...can you drive me to the gas station?" (Yes, he actually said that). I'm 64, so I'm not going to be fighting. I said, "No, but I can call a tow truck for you." Then he gets closer. I said, "Stop." When he kept coming, I turned slightly so he could see the HKUSP. Then he stopped & said, "Whoa, dude." I said "Bye, dude."

He walked back to his SUV. While I was thinking about how unfriendly I acted, he started his vehicle (that had no gas in it) & drove away. I phoned the police & they never showed up.
