I'm not really a shotgun man so I just need something to shoot some pheasants and rabbits at quite close range. What can you recommend? 16 or 20ga will probably work fine for my needs, right?

If I can get it used or new for $100-150, then I'm a happy man :)

If you can find a decent used double-barrel in that price range, it'll be a gold-plated miracle . . .

I think you're more likely to have to spend $300-$500 on a used Stevens, or a Baikal, or a Stoeger, or something like that.

And the 16's and 20's now seemingly command a premium even in the Stevens.

For $100-150 you're looking at a gun with rust and maybe even slight stock problems.

If we could get decent used doubles for $150, we'd all be happy men and women.

"Good" and "Inexpensive" aren't quite anthithetical, but they are close.

If you only have $200, get an 870 Express or a used 870, 500,37,1300 etc. These will last longer than we will although they contribute little to our Elmer Fudd fantasies.

There's few good doubles in the world for less than $500, and most of those are Stevens or Savages 311s and so on..

Good doubles require close tolerances and precision machining. That's why they cost more.

Sorry.....

Stoegers are better than their price would suggest.

Their O/U in basic form (single trigger, but not selective) is under $350 retail.

For really cheap, find an old 870 that's ugly but functions well -- with time and patience, you might. Or get a NEF single shot.

i'll second on the baikal........built like a T-72 and handles like one.......

I was skeptical on the 'inexpensive O/U's', still am to a point. But also considering a Stoger condor Supreme. Friend of mine bought one in 20ga these have the SST. Just under 500, there are less expensive O/U's but they don't have a barrel select.
You'll find alot of shooters knocking cheap O/U's. It never ends. I think if your just after close range small game a pump or single break action will do the trick. Btw; 16ga is much harder to come by (ammo wise) a 20ga would probably save you some cash and do the job.

Many thanks. How much are used single-barrel ones? I will only shoot 50 or so rounds/year...

The single-shots are so cheap new that, in California, it hardly pays to buy a used one, particularly if I have to pay shipping. Depends on the laws/fees your state applies to transferring a firearm.

The top-end H&R Topper Deluxe Classic, with a vent rib, checkered walnut, recoil pad, and automatic ejector is $200 retail. They go DOWN from there!

One caveat: if you don't shoot shotguns, you might want more shots. It's a lot harder than it looks to hit moving game. I don't know, from your post, how much experience you've had with the things.

If inexpensive is your priority then a pump is your best answer. Single shots are good and cheap but they're single shots. Plenty of good pumps available new under $300. Plenty of good used ones for even less (I got a model 12 field grade w/ adjustable choke for $250).

The cheapest doubles even worth considering run around $400 new I personally have a Baikal O/U in 20 ga with many many rounds thru it - very solid gun, also a used Savage Fox SxS circa 1972 in 20 ga. Also very nice. I love them both

I'm basically a recreational shooter and while the model 12 is a great gun, my 20 ga doubles are more fun.

But for birds and rabbits at close range I'd go with a 20 ga pump. The gun is inexpensive and so is the ammo with lots a different loads available at convenient locations. A Remington 870 Express or Mossberg 500 - both good.

Another vote for Stoeger.

I love my coach gun, and for the price you really can't go wrong.

I recently bought a 1920 Fulton 12 ga double for $275. You guys are making me realise how lucky I was.
If you want really cheap, a used H & R / NEF can be had for well under $100.
My Uncle Paul used an old Topper single barrel 16 ga for hunting everything for most of his adult life, but he really knew that gun and could hit whatever he saw. He used it so much he wore all the blue off it, but he could just walk out his kitchen door and hunt. Different place and time now.
You may want to look at a used Mossberg 500, probably available for $175, or a used Winchester 1200 for $250 or so. Some older "store brand" guns are out there, Sears, J C Higgens, Wards, etc, and these are Stevens, High Standard, Winchester, etc guns with less expensive wood for much less money than the "name" brands.
Shotguns require practice and knowledge of how you and your individual gun shoot. You must spend some time and a few boxes of shells practicing and patterning the gun if you actually intend to hit anything moving with it. Sorry to be so long winded.

Enjoy whatever you finally select and good luck.

The Stoger Condor cost about $300 new. I've put over a thousand shells through mine in the few months I've had it (haven't even really cleaned it just add few drops of oil now and then)and it's well worth the cash. And it doesn't beat me up the way my old Savage sXs can after a couple of rounds on the skeet field.

lc,
If you can get an Ithaca SxS for $150, jump on it and do not hesitate. It is worth more than that in parts.

I don't think you can get a "good" double barrel for $100-150. However, you can get a Stoeger Condor for about $300. They are licensed by Benelli, so they may be somewhat decent. I don't own one, but it seems OK.
