I'm just looking to check a box not actually secure anything. What is the biggest stack-on style 'safe' / metal box available?

In order of importance
Capacity
Relatively light weight
Relatively low cost

What's out there and again I'm just looking to check a box not actually secure anything.

I'm just looking to check a box. . .
You haven't specified the requirements to check the box. Metal, or plastic; locking, or will latching do; installed, or is sitting on the floor ok; manufactured, or will homemade do; secured, or can it be disguised instead?

What is the arbitrary standard you're complying with?

Metal office style cabinets, school type lockers, light weight gun safe (Stack-On), file cabinets, job boxes, ect. Look on Craigslist, flee markets, yard sales, estate sales, ect.

I have a double door office style metal cabinet and a file cabinet that I use.

I was just going to suggest old lockers, we tossed some out at work not long ago.

Paid 100 and some change for a metal storage container. Can find them for $50 used. Keeps kids out that’s about it. 5 min w a crowbar and it’s wide open. If that long.

Well, you could check 2 out of 3 with a dead vertical deep freeze. Cheap for sure, I gave my last one to the junk guy (lasted 40 years!, bet the new one doesn’t). Check Craig’s list in your area in the “free” section.

Quite a bit of volume, the number of cubic feet does vary though.

They are not very light. You can recycle the compressor and get rid of a little weight but the insulation is where a lot of the weight is and you can’t get rid of that without destroying the inside/outside of the unit.

Then again, if “relatively light weight”, is relative to even an 11ga sheet metal, fire resistant gun safe, that would check all three…

Yep, but remember that they're just the standard residential security containers as opposed real UL rated safes. You can flip most of them on their side and use a wrecking bar to pry them open.

Yup. Thats what lightweight gets you. But he said he simply needs it to check a box, likely homeowners insurance or the like. So the cheaper the better.

I would prefer one that requires at least two guys to tip over!

I have bought a bunch of office 5 drawer filing cabinets from the county surplus, most counties have them. Go Online and look for your county surplus sales and look for surplus office supplies, Cheap and hold a lot of ammo and can be locked . I have a safe for my firearms but store my ammo in the file cabinets. I just got a two drawer office security cabinet on roller wheels with lock for my powder and primers, $1.16 out the door, can't beat the price. Check out your county Surplus sales online, and bid for the item you want.
