JimKirk,
Reloadron ... you totally missed what I was saying ... I am not measuring HEADSPACE ... only the fit of a cartridge to a chamber ... The drawing I used was not a SAAMI drawing nor was it mean't to be ... it was one I drew up ... it is a total fake cartridge ...

The point I was making is ... as far as reloading a cartridge to fit a chamber ... that we can measure at any point along the shoulder and as long as the sizing die is made correctly ... moving that shoulder will be move the same all along the whole shoulder not just at the per your .308 drawing, the .400 point ...

My bad and my apologies. Nice drawing by the way. No it doesn't matter. Take a fired cartridge and measure it. Then bump the shoulder back a few thousandths. The only thing I see that matters is to measure from the same point every time, even then as long as the measurement will tell you how far back the shoulder has moved it doesn't matter.

This last weekend I put the IT gauge to use. My son's new CZ 527 appears to be on the low side of headspace tolerance. The range brass was measuring over .006" from a fired case from the gun. The gun would tolerate about .004" over the fired size and still close the bolt without too much effort. To solve this problem I had a friend take .010" off the top of a shell holder so I could get the shoulder back enough (and still have some adjustment). FYI, its also handy to have a GO/NO GO gauge for reference to set the IT gauge to. That's how I'm reasonably certain the rifle is on the low side of the tolerance. Once the brass is fired in the rifle the problem goes away.

Also had a similar problem with some military 308 brass. The brass was too stiff to allow resizing it back where it needed to be. Had to grind some off that shell holder there too. The IT gauge makes easy work of verifying all this.

You have probably already done this, but I recommend marking that modified shell holder.
