I posted here a week or so ago asking for experiences with the Timner Sportsman trigger. I got some very positive responses, so I bought one from Brownells, and just installed it a few minutes ago...an incredible improvement!

First, thanks to all who responded to my first post on this...you sure were right!

The Timney assembly took well under 10 minutes to install. I have experience cleaning up Mauser triggers and know how to tap out the retaining pin easily.
I greased the Timney unit on all contact points, put it in place and tapped the pin home. Everything works just fine-the trigger is very light and crisp, and the trigger face is flat and grooved. The safety-an aftermarket replacement unit for the turned down bolt-works perfectly and I plan on taking it to the range Monday to try it all out before I locktite everything down.
I certainly recommend this trigger, and again thanks to everyone who recommended it to me.

Timney...

Dog 'n' Gun--Glad you're pleased w/the Timney. I've installed several and had very good results with 'em. Please give us a range report--with pictures--when you can! :)

dogngun:

Timney is a great trigger manufacturer. I've purchased 4 of their trigers for replacing factory triggers. Never been disappointed yet.

Here is a link to the Timney Sportsman trigger for the '03A3. IIRC, the '03's trigger is pretty much a copy of the K98 and you will need a punch and something to tap the pin in and out with (I use a plastic handled screw driver)...make sure the rifle is unloaded, and have some lube handy to hit the contact points before you install it. Illustrated directions come with the trigger - if you read them first it will take about the same time to install the trigger as is did to read the instructions.

Good luck - you will be amazed.

A buddy put a Timney trigger in his bone stock Mauser 98 8mm, and his rifle went from shooting 4 inch groups at 100 yards to 2 inch groups at 100 yards with no other modifications.

Just my .02,

birdshot: FWIW, I did not even adjust the trigger - it is a vast improvement, and all I want, as it came out of the box. Just a little grease and installed it....works great.

Did not get to shoot it yet - going to be 96 with 80% humiodity here today, so I'm not going out today, either...

Last summer, I picked up a 98K in almost original condition (slightly worked over by the Russians but other than punching the swastikas off the original markings and changing the stock they apparently left it alone).

The trigger was typical military Mauser, creepy and somewhat heavy. It turned out to be an extremely accurate rifle, so I left it alone for a while. Then, I had the opportunity to shoot one that had a Timney trigger installed and the difference was like night and day. Within a week, I had one in the mail from Brownell's and installed.

I will say, that it was necessary to relieve and the trigger area of the stock slightly to make it fit properly but with a narrow wood chisel and a bit of care that wasn't hard and boy what a difference that trigger makes. It cost less than $50 from Brownell's and IMO well worth it.
