interested to hear from black rifle converts

I am currently biased against ARs since I think they are Ugly Black Rifles. All of my guns have wooden stocks and look pretty traditional. However, I would be interested to hear from UBR converts who went over to the dark side.
Don't give in! Buy yourself a wood-stocked M1A and never look back.

I am a hardcore wood stock, bolt action guy........until I laid my hands on a Daniel Defense MK 12.

Nailed it.

The last thing the firearm community needs are divisions based on how we think a firearm is supposed to look.

That plays right into the hands of the anti-gun folks and politicians.

So. By that reasoning, if I like blondes, you like brunettes, and Old Joe prefers redheads, it isn't ok to say so in a public forum?

From my perspective, liking a particular firearm is no cause of division.

Personally, I have no use for an AR 15, and don't particularly like them. I don't own one, and don't see any need for one. That doesn't mean I can't appreciate that others like them, and I say, buy as many as you wish.

I used to ve a diehard wood and steel rifle kind of guy. I shot M1 Garands and 1903's in hlthe CMP games and never thought much of the black rifles even though all the shooters around me also shot them too in NRA Across the Course matches. My shooting buddy who was also a diehard wood and steel M1 Garand/1903/1917 guy decided he wanted to try XTC marched and talked me into trying it too. So I traded off a rifle that I never shot for an Armalite M15 National Match rifle. I should add that prior to this I owned a M4 clone and a retro M16a1 but they were just fun guns and not for competition. The first time I really shot it at 200-300-600 made me a true believe. Wouldn't you know the darn think could shoot and with a lot less effort than my .30-06 rifles. So much so that I hardly shoot my M1s, 1903s, 1917 or any other vintage rifle.

The AR platform is just so much easier to shoot, easier to accurize and customize, more accurate and less costly to feed.

I don't count as I am not a convert. I always have and always will enjoy any type of firearm. It doesn't need to be a matter of conversion, it is a matter of appreciation.

My opinion is that anyone who can't appreciate the AR, given its service, is very closed minded.

I had never been introduced to the AR platform. Not even on the Navy. We still used the M14 which I loved. I came from the brain washed state of Ca and had no desire to own one of them evil black guns. Well that was until I moved to a more free state. I saw the black rifles at the gun shop. I kept ogling them and finally took the plunge. Picked up an SR556. Soon I wanted more. Bought 2 ar10s but since sold them due to weight. That and I found the 458 SOCOM.

Now I have 7. I have sold off some of my bolt and lever action rifles to fund the addiction. I still only have one 556 others are 300BO, 264LBC, and the 458 SOCOM, 2 each. Now I am yearning for a 375 SOCOM. Most of the punch of the 458 but twice the range.

Not me, but my son. He was a stalwart walnut and bluing fan. I got him an 870 with a SpeedFeed stock on it, he replaced it with a Wingmaster. Got him an RIA GI 1911, he traded it for a Taurus .357. Got him a Ruger 10/22 with a Tapco stock, he bought himself a Remington 552. Then he bought a Savage Axis .223 for coyotes, and wound up hunting deer with it. Then he kicked around the idea of getting an AR, until the LGS had a deal he couldn't pass up. And with Dad to clean it for him, (got plenty of experience at that as an Armorer), well I did set it up initially, and showed him how to clean it. Then he decided the 10/22 was easier to lug around out raccoon hunting, and the rails were handy for lights and such. ;) So now I own a Remington 552, and he has the 10/22 he didn't want.....;)

Personally, I like guns. Walnut, plastic, Parkerized, blued, I like 'em all.

I still own many wood stocked rifles both bolt action and semi auto. I love the look and feel of wood and a highly polished blued barrel. As for my AR rifles I enjoy shooting them as well. I own a few as well as a HK USC and a HK91. Add to that a CZ VZ58 and the ARs are but a small part of my gun collection. I trained on the M14 in the military and then changed over to the M16 so I'm used to the platform and enjoy the ability to change calibers with an upper assy. swap. My Ars are accurate and reliable. As for ugly... beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. They are a functional well designed tool to be enjoyed on the range, for personal defense and in the field predator and varmint hunting. JMHO.

To me there's nothing like a traditional bolt gun made with blued steel and glossy walnut.

That being said, it's completely impractical for anything borderline tactical. The AR sheds a lot of weight by not having those things.

There's a time and a place for each. I enjoy shooting AR's and have one, I just don't drool over them like I would an older Remington 700.

an equally equipped AK-74 weighs about the same as an equally equipped AR15... and it can have blued steel and glossy walnut
