While looking for something else I came across an interesting article about firing undersized projectiles designed for cartridge arms out of a muzzleloader using sabots and/or paper patches. The idea was to test the performance of the projectiles at terminal velocities, but I'm sure muzzleloader enthusiasts will find other inspiration from the article. This is a link to the article:

alsaqr - Can you recommend what modern sabots don't leave residue? We had one inline that we used at Adventure Camp and it was tough to scrub out the plastic. Sheets of that stuff came out.

The three piece sabots formerly sold by TC would sometimes leave plastic in the bores: But the things have not been made in many years. i sometimes shoot 300 grain saboted bullets at velocities exceeding 2,000 feet per second from my Encore: Never had residue in the bore. The smokeless muzzleloader guys exceed 2,500 fps with MMP sabots: Sometimes a sub base is used.

There will be problems with rough, rusted and/or pitted bores. Muzzleloaders with cut rifling sometimes have rough bores: Smooth the bore using JB Bore Paste or
jeweler's rouge prior to firing.

Most sabots are made by Harvester and MMP: Both companies have good reputations. i usually use Harvester sabots.

I have been using the MMP sabots in my old T/C Big Boar for years. T/C changes the alloy or something in the old maxi hunters and I could not get them to shoot well any more in my rifle. Not the mention the recoil from a 560gr slug was getting a bit old. I switched to MMP sabots and Hornady 300gr .452 HP/XTP bullets. The are as accurate as my eye and iron sights will manage and the recoil is mild compared to the maxi hunters. Took the biggest deer I have taken to date with that combination.
