this happened a few weeks back. my wife and i had our niece over for the weekend. it was time for her to go back home so i get out of my leisure cloths and into some jeans and a T-shirt. i stop for a second and look at my .357 snubbie and wonder if i should grab it or not since im just driving 10 minutes to her moms house to drop her off and come him since its snowing.

i got dressed and tossed the snubbie on my hip and grabbed my 2 HKS speed loaders and head out.

few minutes down the road we are coming to a red light when a red car speeds up and cuts me off so i have to slam on my brakes so i don't get hit or hit him.

frustrated i tap my horn at him. he starts jumping around and waving his arms while telling me im number 1 with both hands.

light turns green and he take off on our way. he changes into the number 1 lane and i stay in the number 2 lane. he has a few cars pull out in front of him causing him to slow down and swerve in behind me.

now he is honking and flashing his high beam's at me to speed up, im doing 35 in a 30 already so i ignore him and keep talking with my wife and niece.

i eventually get into the right lane and he come speeding up and is trying to split the 1 and 2 lanes between me and the audi to my left. we get to the next light and he is so close to the back of my car i can only see half of his windshield.

when the light turn green i start to let out the clutch and try to pull away. well in the process i roll back maybe 3-5 inches and its just enough to tap his car.

again he starts honking and flipping me off, well in washington its his fault for following too closely. i think nothing of it because my wife and niece didn't notice it. well up the road a little ways further i get into the number 2 lane to turn left. he speeds up next to me and as both my wife and i look over at him he points a 1911 at us.

my wife is instantly on the phone with 911, i try to make a immediate left onto another side street to get away but on coming traffic has me stopped in the center turn lane so he pulls up in front of my car and gets out.

when he opens the door i draw my .357 and have it on my lap under my coat so he cannot see it because at this time i do not see his gun. he walks to my drivers window and holds a department of corrections badge to my window then walks off getting on his phone.

i stayed in my car and made sure to tell the 911 operator that i am a CPL holder and that i am carrying right now and have a .357 on my strong side IWB.

when the police arrive we are all brought out at gun point in the middle of the main road in town. all but my niece are in different cars and in cuffs. once they get the story he is hauled off for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to do bodily harm and we are released on our way.

i talked with the LEO's and they said i did the right thing, but i did have the right to shoot once he pointed his gun at me. i told them i was ready and willing, but only if he had got out with it in hand. i could not live with letting my 13 year old niece see me kill someone, or him or i miss and someone else be hurt.

the detective that is handling the case even stated that we did everything perfectly on the 911 call, letting the operator know i am a permit holder, as well as being calm and speaking clearly on the phone so they could get officers there ASAP.

:what: Wow! I'm glad everyone is okay. I think you did a great job and showed incredible self restraint.

I honestly don't know how I would have handled that situation, especially when there is a child involved.

Glad you're still with us.

Take care,
DFW1911

Also glad all of you made it through without harm, and it didn't have to come to that. Well done.

i can't imagine doing anything differently, i think that if my niece was not there i would have shot him when he came to my driver window.

when the police arrived and had him walk backwards with his hands on his head i could see the 1911 tucked strong side in his waist band with no holster. i also saw he had a 8rnd mag in it.

Another thing about road rage is how unpredictably people can go off, for the slightest driving error such as those we all inevitably commit from time to time, without malice.

Sometimes, even good reasonable driving will set people off. Example: going 8 over the limit, or driving to road, visibility and traffic conditions is too damn slow for some guys.

Other example: Turning left onto a 2 lane highway because imo there is enough room not to interfere with oncoming traffic in both lanes...the driver I end up in front of might feel that I cut in so he rages and tailgates me big time.

However the very next day, same place, say I wait for oncoming traffic because imo there's just not enough room...but the guy behind me who also wants to turn L. onto the highway goes off because now he feels I'm delaying him.

The bigger our cities get, the more we behave like hyenas at a freshly downed kill. Generally, in small rural towns, don't folk give each other a break? I find that generally country folk are more patient and forgiving of each other's simple unintended driving errors.

Glad you made out ok.

nice job for you and wife. you guys talk that stuff out ahead of time or she just naturally got her stuff together?

Uh...Queeks Draw, I theen you jus' imagined doing sometheen differently!

Seriously, in my capacity as an official armchair quarterback, I have to wonder if the presence of your niece should make any difference whatsoever.

If he presented a lethal threat - and from your description it certainly sounds like he did - then your option to defend yourself and your loved ones should NOT be inhibited by the presence of your niece. In fact, you may have had even MORE reason to be prepared to use lethal force.

However, the best possible outcome was exactly what occurred. Nobody got hurt, and the loon went to jail.

That's a big win for the good guys!

BTW, I happen to live in your neck of the woods, and I'm curious where it occurred.

I would also be interested in hearing a follow-up on the outcome of the nut-bag's legal consequences.

I don't think it's my imagination that things are changing dramatically around here - and not for the better...

This also demonstrates one of the rules of working with the police:

HE WHO GETS THE FIRST 911 CALL MADE IS AHEAD OF THE GAME.

Cassandrasdaddy: no we NEVER rehearsed anything, but my wife is a VERY aware person and is a quick thinker.

Rainblowbob: i live in south seattle, this happened in the burien area right by Fred Meyer on 1st Ave

but what you said about if my niece was there or not. you are right, i was ready to act when he got out of his car, but now that you brought up the fact that if she was not there, i think i would have done the same thing i did with here there.

but again it is hard to say. being only 22years old i think im just glad he got locked up and no one was hurt.

one of the best things about having someone like her to help is that it frees you up to focus on your area theres a lot coming at you all at once and you need to process and decide real quick and live with the decision a long time, if you are lucky. not being overloaded by having to call cops etc can make a big difference.keeps you from getting behind the curve catchup sucks

intersting afternoon...

Man! That could have gone real bad, real quick. The Lord was watching over you and I'm thankful nothing happened.

FYI, Down here in Florida, road-raging, gun-toting scumbags are all over the roads. If your going to retire and are thinking about getting a place down here out of that snow, make sure your CWP is valid in Florida too, its CRAZY down here!

Quick Draw, do you know if he is/was with the department of corrections as his badge suggested? Also, do you know if he holds a concealed weapons permit?

Sounds like Burien is getting rough these days. I used to live in Normandy Park when I was younger. Maybe you could answer this for me -am I crazy or didn't the Normandy Park cops drive Volvo Squad Cars back in the 80's.

Quick draw sounds like you did well!

I am a cop and its friggin idiots like that that make my job so much harder. I stopped blaming the public long ago for thinking that cops are brainless badge toters, because no matter how hard I try taking two steps forward in making the world a better place some idiot like that brings me two miles back.

JDoe: ya he was a corrections officer, not any more though i know that much.

2RCO: i was born in 86 and they have always had the crown vics as long as ive known, well that and the tahoe's now.

I'd have had him in the sights of my Beretta the moment he exited his vehicle, and dropped him if he drew. But I like your ending better.

Was he on duty?

Possible civil torts committed against you by the Dept of Corrections or whomever it is that employs him:

1. Failure to supervise.

2. What's his personnel jacket look like?
Known issues before hiring? Improper hiring.
Known issues after hiring? Improper retention.

These sorts of acts by an LEO are very rarely one time or first time things. He's probably got a history, and it's probably known to his chain of command who have refused to take appropriate action.

Last year, a cop who beat up a 50+ year old woman and a 60+ year old man in a bar, then fled only to pass out drunk on his loaded firearm in some bushes had at least a decade's worth of similar incidents under his belt. Some of them were against other cops. NOTHING was ever done.

If there are others like him on the payroll and somebody doesn't jerk a knot in his employers, it'll just happen all over. If nobody imposes a cost, there's no incentive to do anything about them.

well i know he was on probation at work, he was not on duty, nor had anything on his person except his ID card he held to his window to identify who he was or anything.

I can't stand these aggressive drivers. I literally have to give my self a talk before I drive to remind me to just let things go.

Based on my experiences its best to not honk or gesture in the first place and let these guys get on their way.

Do you think it would have been better if you didn't honk at the onset?

A lone voice of dissent.

I guess I have to be the one to bite the bullet and point this out but the incident started ( or at least escalated right here)
frustrated i tap my horn at him.

I hate to be the one to break it to you Quick Draw ( I always liked El Kabong better) but you don't have the right to "get frustrated and tap the horn" while you're carrying a pistol.

Having stressed that point, I do agree that the ending worked out for the best. But you really do have to be the one to back down when you're packing.

A quick horn tap just says, "hey! Be careful! You almost hit me." A long blast says, "Hey dirtbag. Stop driving like a jerk and I won't have to run you over..."

The tap is just a polite reminder. Nothing warranting assault with a deadly weapon. I don't think the OP was in the wrong at all. We have to communicate as a society and try to be heard sometimes or the rudeness of the general public will escalate to horrible levels. People sometimes need a quick reminder that they are doing wrong. Without this feedback they will become sociopaths - only out to please themselves at the expense of everyone else.
