Hi i am new to the forum.
I recently purchased a J.C. Higgins Model 103.13, which according to the crossover chart i found is a Marlin Model 81. It currently has some pretty beat up sights on her, and i was thinking of finding some new sights. what does THR recommend? im really not sure whats out there for this sweet little .22

Check out Brownells. I think that there's usually a link to them on this site. I have the same gun only it's in pretty good shape and it's a Sears & Roebuck model.

BTW, welcome.

she aint in bad shape just seems like the previous owner must have thought a sledge hammer was effective to adjust the sights but i managed too save her from my usual gun shops racks :D

Williams 5D-81 peep sight is supposed to fit.
Verify. I have the rifle not the sight though.

anyone know if the Williams sight is any good? so far i only have some refinishing of the stock done too it. after this sight, some sling swivels, and what not i would love too use her as a drag around plinking/emergency dinner acquirer. on the beat up sights she has i can usually put one ragged hole at 50 yards, until i breathe on her. On another thought ideas too replace the plastic trigger guard and pad are appreciated.

My uncle got mine in a pawn shop not long ago for $35 or $50. Any way he brought it over & I started figuring out right off the bat why the trigger was jammed and such. It has a lot of problems. So he gave it to me. It is "tore up from the floor up". Mangled might be appropriate but something about the rifle has me liking it. I have a Marlin 60 project I am finishing up and a Kimber 82G project to start on. I looked at the 81 and decided to just get a new rifle. Then I had a chance to get the 82G and could not pass that up.

I might get around to the 81 in a year. The trigger guard is not the right one.

Well i ordered the Williams sight for $42 bucks plus shipping. According too reviews the pre drilled holes on the marlin should work but the holes are not threaded. my next undertaking will be to fix some stock rot on the inside of the stock by the forward trigger guard screw. I was thinking of using steel bed and just bedding the rifle while im at it. thoughts ?

Please let me know how you like the sights & where you got them.

I would bed it as it needs repair anyway. Does Steel bed = Devcon. I don't think you would really be ruining a collector piece.

my little .22 got her dialed in with the currently fragile and touchy sights waiting for the Williams too come in :D i hope too one day teach my children on her. decided too go with acraglass on a gunsmiths recommendation will try and show ya how she comes out on a better camera

on a side note the finish is a little prone to rusting compared too my newer firearms any recommendations on a new finish before i attempt too bed her?

The finish doesn't seem too bad for a fairly old firearm.

I got mine at a yard sale last year for $25 with a broken trigger guard and a bit of a rough history. The bluing is a bit worn off, but despite that I don't see any glaring rust, mostly just a light brown patina.

Now I just have to find a working firing pin (numrich only sells one that is too short).

bummer on the lack of a firing pin :'( i never tore down a lot on mine, everything on her seems "serviceable" even though there is evidence of some bubba home gunsmithing. so far after a brick of Armscor .22lr i am itching for the Williams too get in the mail. she shoots better than i expected :) my uncle doesn't like the having to work the bolt much, i do not mind myself.

Here is my JC Higgins 103

I stripped the stock and dyed it. They are great shooters.
You will enjoy the Williams sites.

that is one pretty .22 Mal thanks for sharing :) i would like something a little more substantial for a trigger guard and butt plate but if it shoots well why worry

I went to the Numrich sheet here and I think I got style "A" (style "D" was sold out). It doesn't fill the wood cut out, but hey with how beat to death the stock is, it is the least ugly part on the rifle, and it is made of steel, so it won't break again.
