My latest gun project was to take my Ruger .44 Carbine, which I have owned for over twenty years, and customize it by turning it into a scout rifle. I originally had set it up with a shotgun type Bushnell 2.5x scope, mounted on see through rings, for deer hunting.
My plan was to have a red-dot sight mounted forward and low on the barrel, for fast, both-eyes-open shooting. I added ghost-ring sights and return-to zero rings for the red-dot sight. The red-dot sight will be my primary sight, and the ghost rings will be my back-up sights.
I was able to try it out this weekend. The red-dot sight works great, as do the Warne return-to-zero rings. But, I am most impressed by the ghost-ring sights. Fast, suprisingly accurate, and easy to use.

Very nice. You did some work on that stock, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the replies.

JShirley-
The stock is factory "deluxe model", but it has been re-finished with a matte hand rubbed finish.

Marshall-
For details on mounting the base, see my thread in the gunsmithing forum, "Gunsmith botched my rifle". Sorry, I don't know how to link it. It was a little hairy for a while, but all worked out O.K. It was all made right by the gunsmith, and I am pleased with the results. Last Saturday evening, I sighted in the red-dot, and tried out the ghost ring sights, and re-mounted the red-dot sight to be sure it really did return-to-zero. It works great and I was busting plastic gallon jugs of water at 50 and 100 yds. Later that evening, while out on my deer lease property looking for wild pigs, I came upon a coyote. I shot him trotting away broadside, about 25-30 yds. Just pointed the dot and squeezed, fast and easy like it was supposed to work. Very impressive results, DRT.

Based on his comments in "Kill or Get Killed" I suspect Applegate would approve.
