Is ammo supply shrinking again?

In my neck of the woods, NE Kansas, I have seen a slow but steady increase in the availability of all ammo(except 17Mach2). Was in the KC, KS Cabela's this morning and they had stacks of 22LR...lots of it. The ammo supply at the Tulsa Gun Show 2 weeks ago also displayed plenty of ammo. It is clearly more available these days, not shrinking.

We're visiting our daughter in GA.Passing the ammo display at walmart,it appeared full of all calibers. The .243 price was lower than in PA.

Ammo has become a commodity and prices do rise and fall. Much depends on demand and which way the political winds blow. I do believe there is a little supply dam created by the manufacturers and sellers to keep the prices healthy.
There is plenty of ammo around it's just not as cheap as it used to be.
While some calibers are easier to find than others it's all out there except perhaps for 22's that is still a bit scarce.

Ammo, even 22 lr, is abundant here in central Indiana. More different brands that ever before. Ammo buying is very low stress right now.

We only have three LGS's in my little home town. (Dicks is supposed to be finished soon) All ammo is available here, some prices have gone up a little. 22lr's are still very high here, glad I bought plenty when it was lower. If you get to Wally World early enough on the morning it arrives you can still get bulk at good prices.

Yes "Warp" if you have more than 100,000 rounds, you are over inventory in my opinion.LOL

I've been noticing a consistent shortage in the economy-brands of 9mm, .38 and .357 at Walmart lately (I'm talking about Perfecta and Federal aluminum.)

I agree with that statement. The lower priced, so called economy brands of ammo, are ofter harder to find than the expensive counterparts.

My opinion on that, is that most people, including me, believe that the economic ammo will kill zombies just as well as the premium priced ammo!!!

Well knives and short swords are the weapon of choice for killing "Zombies" and THR is not about discussing them.

FMJ bullets are not as effective as JHP bullets for self-defense. In addition to the lack of expansion the economy grade ammunition such as Winchester is downloaded and labeled for target use.

Economy priced FMJ ammunition is best used for target practice for shooters that do not reload. It also works well for small game hunting as it does not destroy much meat.

FMJ is also the good too choice for semi-autos that will not feed hollowpoints.

I have not seen a shortage of economy priced ammunition in my area. Even Wal-Mart has it in stock.

What I have seen is 22 L.R. is WAY OVERPRICED. $98.00 at a LGS yesterday for a Bucket of Remington 22's! The real problem for me is the lack of 22 Magnum Speer Gold Dot everywhere including the Internet.

Thanks for the imperious lecture, but he wasn't "discussing" them, it was merely a figure of speech.

I'm pretty sure he, and virtually everyone else here, is already well aware of this.

Again, this is such overwhelmingly common knowledge, I'm scratching my head why you felt the need to post it.
No one said anything that implied a need for it.

Yes to these ^

Or to reply to it...dang it, I'm feeding the monster! NOOOOO.......

Interesting thread. I'm totally in agreement with Warp. The OP asked a simple question and suddenly, folks who post about ammo shortages or the folks who buy ammo in bulk are the problem, not the politicians who advocate for more regulations and confiscation. Maybe if we all keep quiet, the gun grabbers will all go away? Sounds like a plan....

During that last long drought, I hardly bought any ammo, I had my little stash already set back (I don't hand load). Began restocking when prices got back to reasonable and placed my last order for the foreseeable future (couple years or so) last week and bought mainly 9MM at $0.20, .223 at $0.30, and all the premium carry ammo I hope to ever need which includes a couple daughters who will become CHL carriers in the next couple years. UPS delivered 3 boxes/140 lbs. So am I the problem? I guess if you have more ammo then me, I'm not, but if I have more than you, I'm a hoarder? LOL!

IMO, the days of stopping by Walmart on the way to the range and knowing all the ammo you'd want would be on the shelf waiting are over. Happens, but not always...

If anything good came from this last 7 years, it the number of new shooters hitting the ranges. Yeah, it may have drawbacks, but more gun owners who vote are a GOOD thing.

So, OP, head over to www.sgammo.com, get on their mailing list, and hopefully, they will be able to meet your needs.

Best wishes to all, and remember, we (99% of folks on this forum) are NOT the problem.

Take Care,

Buzz

NO. The ammo supply is not shrinking. In fact, it's probably still expanding. When ammo gets scarce, supply is not the problem, it's demand.

The problem is not people who keep a large inventory on hand--at least not if they built their inventory intelligently. I have a large inventory on hand, but I buy when demand is low and prices are high. That's how I can afford to keep a large inventory.

The problem is people who panic when they start seeing the shelves empty and buy all they can when demand, and prices are already high. That pushes demand/prices even higher and feeds the panic of others.

Thanks, Buzz - I'm already there. Got 6k rounds from SGAmmo the end of March. The wife keeps asking "DO we have enough?", so I don't think we have too much...

Just wait until Hillary gets to the White House. There's going to be a major panic and all ammo will be gone from the shelf.

Nice having a wife who understands that "ammo" is one of the four must have basics of life (coffee, whiskey, toilet paper, and ammo). LOL!

I'm a big SGAmmo.com fan. Fast shipping, great prices, no sales tax for out of state sales...

She has three 9mms of her own, and likes to shoot. Took me 20+ years to get her to try shooting, but now she really enjoys it.

I expected that as November approaches, but has anyone else noticed this trend?

Maybe just tax returns getting invested in ammo, but my usual sources online are out of most of what I prefer, and ammoseek.com is showing rising 10-15% prices and shrinking supply.

Or maybe it's just more guys like me are stocking up more than we ever have before. I haven't had this much on hand since I quit competing back in the '80s.
If I were starting to make a guess I'd point out that so far we've gone through the 2008 and then the 2012/13 panics and now we're approaching the Nov 2016 presidential elections with one of the candidates being the most rabidly anti-gun and anti-freedom that we've had within living memory.

Add to that the fact with each successive panic we've added new gun owners each time who've either come of age since then or decided that it's better to just buy a gun before some classes of guns become unavailable or illegal and that these new shooters have developed some interest in gun ownership. Logically both of those types of new gun owners are going to want to shoot their new guns in addition to the millions of existing gun owners.

So I'd say that at least until Nov 2016 the availability of guns, ammunition and accessories and almost certainly prices are almost likely to fluctuate wildly. Hopefully after November things will settle down.

Let's not pretend like the current POTUS isn't rabidly anti-gun and hasn't done everything he could to ban or infringe on whatever was possible, to include a huge emotionally laden PR event. But what was accomplished (federal level)? Not a damn thing.

Yes, all completely true. Perception drives these gun panics more than facts sometimes though.

Plus there's also the problem that if Hillary or Bernie becomes President that they'll be the ones appointing the USSC Justice to replace Scalia. What then? 5-4 favoring the anti-freedom crowd on the USSC doesn't exactly bode well for the Second Amendment.

All I'm saying is that to some extent political uncertainty and fear drive gun sales. People want what is threatened legally.
