This actually applies to me in the immediate sense, so I'm hoping for some quick answers. I need to visit an enlisted man (whom I barely know) stationed on base here in NY at West Point later this evening to view and possibly buy a firearm related part from him. I'm in New York and have an unrestricted NY state carry permit, but of course all the state and federal no-carry rules apply in their respective locations. I'm just not sure if a military base is one of those off-limits locations. I'm sort of assuming I know the answer already, but I'd like some confirmation on that.

Problem is I really don't feel comfortable not carrying in some of the areas I'll be traveling through, but if I'm not allowed to bring a firearm onto the base, that puts me in a tough spot.

So, what do you think THR ?

I don't have a legal answer for you, but why not meet the guy off-base? If he can't leave for very long, I'd think that walking outside the gates and maybe across the street would be sufficient for you to remain legal.

That's up to the discretion of the base commander, but generally they don't even let the soldiers have guns on base. (You might can make arrangements to check the gun at the guard shack at the base entrance and pick it up when you leave, but again you need to make prior arrangements with the commander's office.)

Meeting off-base makes a lot more sense. I think you'd have better luck getting permission from a elementary school principal (in Massachusetts) to bring a gun on campus that to get permission to bring a gun onto a military base.

It's a FEDERAL instalation. So it is NO unless the base commander says yes THEN only to authorized personnel;live or work on said base.

It would be bad juju if caught with out the right authorization.

Thanks for the answers guys. As I said initially, I figured the same. I was just curious really, as I've had no reason to be on a military base for a very very long time.

I think what I'll do is.. once I'm already on the way , I'll call and ask the fella if we can meet off base specifically since I am ccw'ing it. And I .. *Ahem*.. didn't think of it before I left .. yeah.. that's it :p

On a serious note though, I hadn't actually thought of it until after we spoke last. I, like most of you I'm sure, generally don't like to have to make seperate arrangements due to the fact that I carry, most specifically because I'd rather not tell anyone I'm carrying.

Well you can not conceal carry on base, what you can do to be on the safe side is before you pull up to the base lock it in the trunk or have the person meet you off base, I assume its just like all government facility you can not carry so just to be on the safe side and hassel free either meet off base or just lock it up in the trunk if questions rise and the car is searched for a random reason you can always display your permit and might have less hassels

The general answer is no, not without the Base Commanders approval. As a Retired LEO I can carry in some AF and CG Installations but not all, as I said it's up to the CO. Some have me lock it in the trunk and some have me check it one station doesn't want to be bothered with it in any way.

Just a reminder, they don't need probable cause either to search you or your car.

Yeah, but not a big deal. I'm not the kind of person that would risk it anyway. Especially since gun rights don't always come easy in NY, and I would never chance losing what little headway I've achieved over the years.

Right, but someone suggested locking it in the trunk, and I don't see that as anything close to good advice unless you have the base commander's permission to have a gun in your trunk. Not saying that you would risk it, just a general comment to all the comments above.

Entry onto base IS consent for a vehicle search. And they conduct random searches prior to entry on base. Gun in trunk = handcuffs and a visit to a Federal law enforcement establishment. Not the best of advice.

Locking your gun in the trunk and entering the base property would be a really bad idea. I drive truck and enter military facilities from time to time, many times they use dogs at the gates to "run around" the vehicles rather than do an actual physical search. I was going into Shaw AFB one day and a contractor pick-up was coming in using the smaller vehicle lane. They took the dog around his pick-up, and it went nuts! He had a few cartridges for a .22 caliber power nailer, to drive nails into concrete laying in a tool tray in the utility bed of his pick-up. He didn't have a real happy time with the AP's on duty.

As stated, weapons are a big no-no.

Now, a base near my location has shooting facilities accessible to civilians (affiliated with the base club, generally DOD employees) and allows you to bring your firearms on post only to visit those facilities, no stopping anywhere else. I'm considering using their facilities, but am going to have to do a lot more inspecting of the issue and getting very clear instructions/clearance before daring to bring my firearms onto the post.

Does anyone know what the max penalty is for transporting a gun into a military base?
These days? Probably a trip to Gitmo, as a domestic terrorist.

If You Have to Ask...

You can't afford the time. Myself, I can't afford to spend any of my remaining precious time sitting in a Federal prison. Your choice, if you opt to let me know when you get out.

FWIW, I've driven into Camp Guernsey (WY ARNG base) and Fort Benning with guns in the car. It is not true that it is strictly always prohibited-- but you'd better do your research with the authorities at the base in question before attempting it.

At the local AF bases Security Forces will make you kiss the ground at unsafed rifle point, cuff you, and do the whole deal. Even if they know you well. This is even if it's locked in your car and undeclared.

No harm in calling and asking. Policies vary and the most common "helpful" situation is where they'll let you secure your weapon at the entrance facility.

CCW permits are not recognized on military installations, so that's a no. Here at Fort Bragg, weapons must be registered, within 5 days of arrival. Transportation in the car is legal, provided you are going directly to/from shooting range, hunting, etc. If you make stops in between, you are in violation. The rules are pretty strict. Its odd, but I can walk down the street on post with a class III machine gun, grenade launcher, or any manner of destructive device, and that's perfectly okay, yet one cannot store or transport a standard privately-owned weapon without a lot of red tape.

Don't even think about it unless you want a quick trip to the US Magistrate.
