Is it time to buy a Beretta 92FS?

I have served in the military for over 20 years now, have carried a Beretta for 17 years of that time. I was sad at seeing the old 1911 go away, but was even more saddened at seeing the Beretta as its replacement. I don't have any issue with the caliber, I just think the Beretta was a very poor choice. Because I am an avid shooter I can still shoot it very well and I qualify expert with it every year, but I absolutely HATE the Beretta! There is nothing in its design I like. But then again thats just me. They do go bang every time you pull the trigger and they shoot extremely well. I just don't like the design.

I'm also sad to hear that a few of you actually had to wait for your gun after purchasing it. I think that is total bulls**t! Does a waiting period really do anything other than irritate hard working law abiding gun owners like me or you? No. I'm glad I live in a state (Idaho) that allows you to take your gun home as soon as its paid for. They do run an instant background but that usually only takes about 5-10 minutes. Thats enough time to decide what self defense ammo you want. And if you have a concealed weapons license then there is no check. Just fill out the paperwork, show them your CCW license, give them your money and take your gun home.

Those who don't like the Beretta and are in the military are just stuck with it. But, you are a civilian and apparently like having a collection of firearms rather than buying a gun or two that have to serve all purposes.

So I say, if you want it simply to have it, why not get one. Mine is strictly a range gun and one that I enjoy owning and shooting it.

Italian, 1990 and how it currently looks:

Wearing the grips it came with alongside my beretta Stampede:

I have nothing against a waiting period. With all the legal BS that gun dealers have to put up with these days, it is in their best interests to make sure that the person purchasing the firearm is actually a "hardworking, law-abiding gun-owner like you and me."

I posess a concealed carry permit which allows me to waive the waiting period. All that took was a little effort and "irritation" beforehand to ensure I wouldn't be irritated again later.

Also, a waiting period may prevent the riff-raff from purchasing a firearm illegally for nefarious deeds... possibly ensuring that I won't have to draw my weapon on them sometime in the future.

the new models have plastic triggers, recoil guides, and saftey levers.

They also have plastic magazine release buttons, plastic hammer spring caps and plastic magazine floor plates.

I'd try to find and older all metal 92FS.

You guys do know that the original post was made in 2006 right?

Major, welcome to THR. If you're still over there, I hope the rest of your deployment goes smoothly. If you're back, I hope your transition goes well.

Here in Connecticut most dealers now have a direct broadband connection to the Department of Public Safety, which facilitates a truly instant background check upon purchase of a firearm. I hope you agree that this system is an acceptable replacement for waiting periods, and furthermore, that every state should adopt it in lieu of the latter.

As to the original point of this thread, ancient or not, I am extremely happy with my personal 92FS, and the ones owned by Uncle Sam that I've qualified with worked just as well, even with non-factory magazines.

Great post hahaha!!! But you'll remember he kept it for Hans at the end, proving that duct while it does stick to the finish does not render it inoperable.

And yes, get an M9 or 92FS.

I carried a military Beretta in Iraq for a Year.......and it was nothing more than a paper weight. An Iraqi policeman told me that he felt sorry for me because they didnt issue me a Glock.

Not a 92, but I just bought a used PA State Police 96D in .40. DAO, smoothest trigger pull I've ever experienced in an auto. It's my first Beretta, couldn't pass it up for 225.00.
