Is it useful to send the NRA-ILA any more money?

I learned something new today. I let my NRA membership lapse years ago because I also grew tired of the constant fear-mongering and their lobbying efforts don't represent my views as a gun owner. However, I am a big fan of their training and range programs. I'll have to investigate renewing my membership.

Is there not a state level organization?

Yes, but that's not the topic of this thread.

You want everything done FOR you?

No, but i want the NRA-ILA to do something too. I did not see them represented in any official capacity when i was in Hartford; and I hear they have more clout than little old me.

The NRA-ILA has to cover the feds.

So States' laws and Constitutional Rights issues are not issues the NRA/ILA deals with? That is news to me.

like them or not they are the only force standing between us and total elimination of 2A rights..so yes, id say its worth it to support the NRA-ILA.

who cares about gettin a friggin duffel bag. thats not really what we're supposed to be paying them for. i understand they need to do what they say, but maybe it was a mistake.

Why is it when ever the bigest dog in the fight for our liberties and what we as gun owners value, out come all those that wish to bash the NRA.

And also they are the same ones who find it impossible to call the 800 "free" number on the back of their membership card to stop the mailings.

Also the same ones who still cannot get the fact most of the mailings are made by a fundraising company with the NRA getting a portion of the take with no expense on their part.

Is this really that hard to understand?

19-3Ben:
I appreciate the correction. My estimate was intended to be on the very low side, needing anybody with a much closer estimate 'to chime in'.
My computer has no bookmark with data on how many gun owners reside in a given state.

NRA is the big, old dog in the yard with much bureaucratic bumbling. Years ago, I would get a notice to contact my elected officials about this or that vote. It came 2nd class mail and a day or more AFTER the vote. I complained. They took me off the mailing list! Friend, gunsmith lived about 2 miles away and continued to get the mailings and gave them to me... STUPID.

GOA and JPFO are smaller, better organized, and probably a better investment. Maybe someday big enough to be effective like the NRA... Tough call. The late Neal Knox "Hardcorps" remains a decent inside look at the NRA bureaucracy. Neal had the best connections. Lesser now. Spread the money around.

For a time I was NRA tv local producer. (They sent me a video tape and I put it on the local cable channel.) In one tape Marion Hammer told how she started the concealed carry movement in Florida and when it was "up and running" THEN the NRA showed up to help. I remember that. (And the NRA registered punk who was telling loudly that the Colt Commander had a steel frame and the Combat Commander had an alloy frame for sissy soldiers... he had one, he knew. Sounded wrong to me but the NRA put their [my] money behind this punk. I said nothing but when I got home I looked and he had it backward... He also spoke enthusiastically about his success with "amour..." ) If in my youth and ignorance I had not bought a life membership, I would have stopped renewing long ago...

I am very thankful that while those that dislike/bash the NRA are very vocal, they still are in the minority in the shooting & gun related fraternity, lets just pray it stays this way.

The rest of us will carry those who wish a free ride.

"Is it useful to send the NRA-ILA any more money?"

This is a subjective question. I would say "yes." Michael Bloomberg would answer "no."

I've been a LIFE member for 30yrs. but sure get tired of the crap I get in the mail every couple of days...if they would stop sending that stuff out they would have plenty of jingles...I give [5] 1yr. memberships every month to people I know that's my contribution....take care

I'll take your word for it cause all I see on the back of my card is them trying to sell Ins., VISA cards, cat. of items to sell & legal help ..I'm still 110% behind them but I still think they could save money by not hiring to send the crap if that's what they do...BTW ;my brother dropped his Life mem. because of the mail flood & it is that hard to understand ...lighten up dude & remember MARINES rule...take care

Yes it's useful. If you expect to get prizes for joining, then no. The idea is to keep them in business to support our rights, not the trinkets they give away.
Without them we may have lost our rights several times before, as very few people would continue to focus on these things other than when they are in the public eye, "like a mass shooting".

For those that still can not find the number or understand how to stop the mailings, here you go.

Simply email us at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal."

Took an Army Guy to post this!

I wonder if all those who get so upset about mailings from the NRA feel the same way about all the local advertisements they also get in the mail.

When both the Senate and House finally pass much tighter gun regulations (or in gradual steps), one dark day following the next nightmare, my 24 year-old son's generation won't even have access to what we now have, unless our guns are all 'grandfathered in'. Imagine the price for a S.G. Garand from the CMP.

What we lose probably won't return....and there are plenty of sociopaths, not to mention psychos, unable to deal with their delusions, waiting to appear on the evening news.
Instead of the NRA, let's all just spend our extra money on some beer and O. Redenbacher "Movie Style" popcorn.

Might as well sell all our firearms or just turn them in at the next gun buy back and give up and call it all over.

Makes just as much sense!

We might have even get enough money for the beer and popcorn.

No one that has posted in this thread has an excuse for receiving the mailings. You have posted online which is where you can opt out of them. It's the first thing I did when I received my membership card some years back. It takes about two minutes to do so no one has a valid excuse for complaining about the mailings.

I'm not a fan of either organization outside of the NRA's training programs and range insurance. There would be a lot fewer ranges if the NRA did not insure them. And their training programs are great for introducing people to firearms. Unfortunately they are the only option politically. You can name whatever organization you want. They don't have the pull that the ILA does. I don't agree w/ them 100% and I feel that they compromise to much. But I still willingly contribute to them. I also contribute to organizations in my state since the NRA can't be there for every fight.

Currently there is a lunatic acting as the mayor of NYC who would very much like to take away my guns along with my Second Amendment rights that my forefathers gave me. This lunatic is worth billions of my dollars. He also has no shortage of friends that are well financially backed. This guy supports many elected Democrats and threatens them if they don't see things his way and vote on legislation as he seems to think they should. I dislike this man very, very much and also what he clearly stands for.

All of my rights afforded to me by the Bill of Rights are very important to me. This is especially true of my second amendment rights. My representation is the NRA and they speak for me on the hill. So yes, as I can afford donations, we make donations. Without my NRA I likely would have lost my rights many years ago.

Yep, i have a few minor issues with the NRA: For awhile i refused to contribute to the NRA-ILA. i now realize that was a childish decision. My contributions to the NRA-PVF and the NRA-ILA have resumed and will continue.

The NRA is the big boy on the block. Without the NRA you could not legally own a .22 rifle today.

In 2012 another organization contributed more money to pro-gun candidates than the GOA, NAGR and the NSSF combined. Most folks never heard of the Safari Club International.

BTW: Fewer than ten percent of NRA members ever contribute the price of a premium six pack of beer to the NRA-ILA or NRA-PVF. Each mailing campaign nets about one million dollars for the NRA. i don't mind the mailings.
