I am in the process of trying to find a mossberg 590a1 on gunbroker. There are plenty of options. I was looking for a particular model tho, item #51660. regular synthetic stock, bead sights, 8+1 capacity, tang safety, 20" barrel. However it seems that this model is hard to come by. All i can find is the model with the heat shield and speedfeed stock. Does anyone have experience with this stock? Is it worth the extra bit of cash? This is basically going to be a home defence gun. Thanks for the input!

I have no experience with Mossberg's but my 870 police came with a speedfeed stock that held 4 shells. If you shoot lefty, the right shell holder is in a bad spot and doesnt work well getting a good cheek weld. Also after a while the springs loosened up a bit and it would drop shells under recoil. I also found it awkward trying to reload using the shells in the stock, a side saddle or buttcuff works much better for me. I ended up buying a speedfeed (sans shell holders) off ebay and used it or a good while until I found a set new set of walnut that someone took off a new gun. Another issue with synthetic stocks is if you have to have your stock shortened to fit you, it is a much harder job than with a wood stock.

I think that it is a good concept, but it just didn't work for me. They obviously work for others or they wouldnt be selling. I'm sure others will be along, but just wanted to share my experience with the stock.

+1 on the non-shellholder. Speedfeed are decent stocks, but the shell holders are a bit of a gimic. Buy the 5-shell elastic sleeve holder. Cheaper and better, IMO.

i own a speedfeed 590 and the shell holder is almost useless its ok for show but to store shells in it for more than a few hours it bulges them
the springs are VERY heavy on mine and i have yet to see them break in and ive left shells in it for DAYS trying
realisticly trying to "speed" load from these holders just isnt going to happen the way the holders are cut the shell only comes out one way and one way EXACTLY
its very easy even with practice to fumble with it

all in all i really think its more novelty that practicality

just adding that i wasnt given a choise on this when i got the gun my girlfriend got it for me for christmas and she just picked every option she could get and boy was i happy that christmas

I tried one also, early along. My conclusions are pretty much the same as others so far. Seems like a great idea in theory, in practice, not so much. I like Sidedaddles better.

For HD use, it may not be something you would be wise to rely on. Now, I have one on my 590 but it came that way and thus, I have no problem keeping it on the gun as the stock itself is solid and "feels" nice.

Based on my personal experience (when actually trying to use the shell holders), I found that unless each individual "magazine" was loaded to max capactiy (2 rounds), the shells would come out during recoil. Loaded to max capacity (regardless of which side), the stock seemed to "function" as expected.

While I have become somewhat adept at using this stock, as I mentioned before, I probably wouldnt rely on it or even need it when it comes to HD as Im no longer obsessed with keeping extra ammo on my HD gun (given the 8+1 capacity of the 590). Now, for using out in the field or range, it may prove just as useful and convenient as anything else.

Makes me wonder if you can pull out the spring and innards and stuff a few Slim Jims and a Snickers in the hole..

If you dont have a Speedfeed stock, try it with the shotguns mag tube...excepts use cigars. Lets be serious.....;)
