As a reliable and at least semi-comprehensive referrence source for determining an approximate value for out-of-production knives and high-quality reproductions of historical edged weapons?

I've spent the past few weeks digging through Google, E Bay, Guns America, Gun Broker, etc. looking for clues, but it seems as if most of the stuff I need to try and evaluate doesn't show up enough on them to find any listings or sale history to go by.

Would like to be able to ask the members on The Blade Forum. Unfortunately, even if I specifically state that I'm not offering any of them for sale their admin/moderators would prefer that I not do so unless I purchase a "Gold" level membership first. This, I'm told, is because of the possiblity that I might receive attractive offers via PM despite any disclaimer and be tempted to accept one, which would violate their policy that only "Gold" level members may sell anything. I can understand their reasoning and the need to protect their interests, but I'm still mulling this one over.

The Knife Forums is another place I've tried, but have run into another "Catch-22" there. In the registration process, there is a required data box which states: "Prove that you are human. Answer This....". No actual question ever appears afterwards and nothing that I input as a possible answer has been accepted. Also tried their "Contact Us" page, but there's the same box and I get the same results: nada.

While I'm looking into the possibilities for getting an expert appraisal done, doing that is proving to be both challenging and, potentially, quite expensive as I would either have to travel several hours each way to get to them or pay their appraisal fees plus travel expenses for them to come to me.

Advancing RA pretty much precludes driving long distances for me, and I'm pretty certain that the fees (judging from a couple of "ballpark" quotes) and associated expenses would almost certainly exceed 50% of what my modest accumulation is likely worth.

Sure would appreciate it if somebody could recommend a "Blue Book" type referrence or a lead on finding an experienced and knowledgable appraiser inside of a 75 mile radius of Indianapolis. I'd prefer someone specializing in things of this sort rather than a "general estate auctions" person, as I've been told that information on items such as these from many of these folks has proven to be unreliable at best.

Many, many thanks for any help you can offer!

Can't help you with your issue, but looking at knifeforums.com registration page, that box with the question has a flash math question for me. Maybe one of your browser settings is preventing it from playing. It's 4 frames, mine was (four 4) (plus +) (seven 7) (equals =), each phrase in parenthesis was a different flash screen.

Much appreciate the response. You're probably right about it being an issue with my browser. Since we got this furshlunginer PC with Vista and IE 7 on it, nothing "works" the way it used to and for the life of me I can't seem to figure out how to make it do what I'd like the way I'd like for it to.

Back to the tutorial and then "once more into the breech", I suppose.

Thanks, rc. I'll see if I can't check it out. The bulk of what I have, while not exactly antiques, are high-quality production knives, folding and fixed-blades, that I've accumulated over the years. The main trouble seems to be that many of them have been out of production for several years at least, and some were apparently made in limited quantities or for a relatively short period of time. Some were produced by companies which no longer exist, although in a couple of cases the names live on but the quality of the products is reputed to have fallen considerably from where it was originally.

What repros I have are well-crafted, quality examples of ancient or Medieval swords and edged weapons that have always interested me but which I would otherwise never have the means or opportunity to own or handle. None are of the so-called "Fantasy" genre and none are cheap, "decorative" wall hangers. Evaluating those is going to be a tough row to hoe, but I'm not going to live forever and I'd like to put together an inventory with at least ballpark figures for my wife to have after I'm gone. Vultures seem to flock to feast on the uninformed and I'd like for her to be able to have something to give her an idea of who's making a legit offer and who's not.

Repro swords will be a great challenge if you don't have all the original material, along with the receipt.
