I've recently received a number of items from my Grandfather's estate.
He returned from the European theater in 1944 and discharged according to his DD214. According to my father and Grandmother, he also returned with a good condition Mauser rifle. It has a number of markings that I believe are consistent with the era.
Per my insurance agent, I should take photographs and obtain appraisals of specific items I've inherited. Thus I've taken the rifle to be appraised by an auctioneer that frequently deals with firearms, who told me that I had a fraudulently produced rifle.
I asked him for specifics, without his answering me. From his attitude, he apparently had little time to answer such academic questions posed to him. As such, I left with the rifle and without paying his appraisal fee.
I do believe that the rifle is genuine, but unsure of how to research the authenticity. Is anyone with any type of experience able to point me in the right direction in this matter.
Would there also be any potential reasons why someone would intentionally mislead or misappraise this firearm?
