I looked at my wife's S&W 22A-1 pistol and saw these two shiny gouged areas. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal?

Does she dry fire a lot? That shiny area is where the extractor hits and is normal within reason, but a cartridge or snap cap should reduce it. Also, it looks like the firing pin may be hitting the edge of the chamber at the top, something that should not happen.

BTW, it looks like that pistol needs a good cleaning; I hope she will take care of that reasonably soon.

No dry firing. Possibly dry fired before we bought it at the gun shop. Also, this was discovered by me when I went to clean it. I know it needs to be cleaned. Thanks.

The shiney place in the extractor grove is normal. This is where the extractor parks when the slide is forward it wipes itself clean. The spot above the chamber can't be seen well but if the gun loads and extracts ok it is not an issue. Dry firing is ok with this gun. While cleaning inspect the area around the trigger pin for cracks. Get a new plastic buffer from Brownells(get a bunch their cheap). I put a new recoil spring in at the same time, cheap as well, get at the same time as the buffer. :)
Good Shooting
