I thought that Ranger SXT was the re-branded Black Talon and that Winchester started fazing out the Ranger SXT in 1998 when they released the T-Series.

I just saw a bunch of this stuff become available at SGAmmo.

I would have that that the ammo scare / ammo crisis would have cleared all the old inventory of the SXT.

Is Winchester still making productions runs of this stuff?

Winchester PDX1/SXT, Ranger T/T Series, bonded....

I was just looking over the Basspro.com site & saw they had the Winchester .45acp PDX1 bonded design in stock, price: approx $26.00 USD for 20 rounds.

To my knowledge the SXT design hasn't really changed. The Ranger T/T Format is the same bullet profile as the SXT.
Bass Pro Shop states the defense PDX1 load(s) were picked by the FBI for the sidearms, .
My city's PD has used the Ranger T/T Series 127gr +P+ 9x19mm for several years.

Some US law enforcement agencies seek bonded loads or handgun rounds that can do well against common barriers like auto glass, wood, drywall, clothing.
Bonded rounds have merit under some applications but many non bonded rounds do just fine in critical incidents.

Winchester & the LE section modified the dreaded Black Talon to the more pro-LE sounding Ranger T. Then in the early 2000s, the T series came out.

I just bought 2 boxes of it from gunbroker and they still had several listings for it a few days ago. Not cheap but excellent ammo. According to Winchester's LE web site it is still being made. I have not found anything better.

The first generation T-Series ran from 1998 to 2009. I have heard that they changed the design in 2009, one thing that was apparent to the naked eye in a side-by-side comparison was that the cavity on the Ranger T had changed. It is a slightly different design than the SXT.

Supposedly the latest T-Series is not as velocity dependent so it has a much larger window that it will work in.

I don't understand why the SXT is appearing on shelves in 2014 unless Winchester is still making it.

I think the Ranger "T" Series is better than the SXT.

Winchester's comparison webpage (doesn't include SXT):

I called Winchester and the SXT series has been discontinued, but the Ranger T is still being made.

Those bullets at SG are old new Stock. You can tell by the old tan boxes also. Ranger T's,PDX1,Ranger Bonded and Defender are the current Winchester lineup. SXT is an old design but I think they are still awesome and Sam's price can't be beat.

I don't think they were sitting anywhere in SGAmmo's inventory system - there was a time, after Newtown when SGAmmo had no 9mm ammo except for CCI shotshells. They had no regular 9mm ammo at all.

They were cleared out.

Doesn't that mean that they recently procured that SXT ammo from someone else?

I just don't see how it could have sat around at SGAmmo through the ammo crisis.

SXT is an old design but I think they are still awesome

My own experience, it has been difficult to track down 4xdenim gel tests for SXT, RA9SXT because a lot of the time the testers are using the SXT name but they're really testing PDX1 or Ranger "T". I don't have any data how they do out of a 3" barreled pocket nine.

There are quite a few tests of Federal standard pressure 147gr HST (P9HST2), even out of a 3" barrel, and I think I am going to switch over to that as my carry ammo.

Thanks Snooperman for calling Winchester.

Your choice of the HST 147 gr standard for short barrel carry gun is a very good one. In fact it performs better than the HST 124gr +P ammo in short barrels. I like all of the HST ammo by federal as it is very consistent in penetration and expansion. Out of the Kahr PM9 the 147gr can give 14.5" penetration with an expansion of .67". From shot to shot it is impressive thru denim-gel tests.

Good luck finding some HST 147's I got one box of +p and 1 standard pressure.

The HST 124 penetrates deeper than the 147 but the 147 has larger expansion. I don't think you can go wrong with any HST bullet. I've never seen one experience jacket separation either.

Shooting the Bull has a youtube channel and HST has been the best he's tested in 9mm out of a 3" barrel. I keep 124's in my taurus pt709 and 147 in my G19

I got some ranger t's 127 +p+ a couple months back from SG but I haven't carried them yet. I did shoot a mag to test and I couldn't tell a difference in felt recoil.

Can you tell I love bullets and balistics? My wife hears more than she probably wants to about it. I just think bullet technology is awesome these days but also realize most common quality JHP will give the desired results.

NOMI, I hear it from my wife too, but that has been going on for most my 49 years of marriage to her. Anyway, ammo improvement in the past few years has been great too. Gunbroker has quite a bit of HST ammo listed at $60 for 50 rds of 124 gr 9mm non +p , same as recommended by "Shooting the bull" for short barrel guns. There is a lot of 147 gr stuff too. I just bought some Ranger and SXT the other day and may give a try on the HST too for my PM9. It gives me something to do here at my farm range, as I like to test it too.

I use Gunbot to search for ammo, almost every morning and again when I get home from work.

Last night I hit the jackpot, Ammo To Go got some P9HST2 in - the Federal standard pressure 147gr HST. I bought 250 rounds and they sold out almost immediately. I got confirmation that my order is shipping so I am glad - I was afraid that they might have sold out before they could pull my order :(

Thanks for the links on the ammo as Gunbroker can be a little high. I would like to get some of the 147 gr for my carry nines as well. Based on several tests done the HST ammo seems to be one of the most consistent in expansion and penetration for a given barrel length.

I placed my order, hit refresh on my browser and the page where I'd just originated my order had changed to say "Item Not Available"

I don't know how much ammo they had but it went quick.
